VBC: Home of Alpha ShowdownUpdate: With 68% of the vote Mercy Thompson advances! She’s the first alpha female to do so this year. Congrats, Mercy Thompson (Patricia Briggs)!

We’re into the second week of Alpha Showdown 2017, and I need to be honest with you: It isn’t going to get easier. We have beloved and badass alphas ready to vie for your favor.

Today’s no exception. For Round 6 we have previous Alpha Showdown champion Reyes Farrow from Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series up against long-time VBC fan favorite Mercy Thompson from the series of the same name by Patricia Briggs.

The competition is stiff this year (peek at the bracket), but the winner is all up to VBC readers. Each round is open for 48 hours. The winner advances.

REYES FARROW

You know him from: the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones
First appeared in: First Grave on the Right (VBC review | Amazon)First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones // VBC
Supernatural status: Son of Satan

Championed by: All the girls from Under the Covers Book Blog

You may wonder what the hell Reyes is doing in an Alpha Showdown. He seems mild mannered, calm and collected and can even cook a nice meal for his wife!  What type of alpha is that? Our answer to that; the best kind. He may seem cool at first glance, but don’t forget that you are literally dealing with the son of Satan here, you don’t want to piss him off. And anything putting the woman he loves in danger is guaranteed to put him in a very bad mood. Ripping out your spine and beating you with it kind of bad.

So, you can vote for someone obvious, someone whose ego is as overbearing as his personality, or you can vote for Reyes. Someone who quietly commands your attention and respect just as he commands millions of soldiers and causes damage on a global scale…and who will happily tear you apart if you endanger someone he loves, he is the devil’s son after all.

MERCY THOMPSONMoon Called by Patricia Briggs // VBC Review

You know her from: The Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs
First appeared in: Moon Called (VBC ReviewAmazon)
Supernatural status: walker/coyote shifter, daughter of the trickster god Coyote

Championed by: Margaret from VBC

In Patricia Briggs’s latest Mercy Thompson novel, Fire Touched, Mercy describes herself as, as vulnerable as any human. My superpower consisted of transforming into a thirty-five pound coyote. Why do we think she deserves to be an Alpha Showdown champion then?

Right after she said that, Mercy went off to battle a troll. She rescued an injured woman and her baby, shot the troll in the eye, and stabbed it in its big, green troll junk. She defended her unconscious husband with nothing but a stick and a bottle of essential oil. Mercy’s faced vampires, river monsters, and Fairy Queens and come out on top.

Mercy has a unique relationship with magic. She can see ghosts, where most supernaturals in her world can’t. She can tap into pack magic, even though she’s not a werewolf. And she can wield weapons meant for only the Fae. Her god-forged walking stick always appears when she needs it. She’s kind of a special snowflake, but it also makes her unpredictable.

I would also argue that shapeshifting is not Mercy’s only superpower. She’s also incredibly stubborn. Mercy never gives up, even though she winds up nearly dead at the end of so many of her books. She doesn’t do what’s expected. I mean, she’s an auto mechanic. She defies authority, mostly the Marrok’s, by knowing the rules and finding the loopholes. So she’s not only smart, but sneaky. She has to be to survive in a world where everyone else is bigger and stronger. That’s why she also carries a gun.

Mercy’s got a werewolf pack at her back and allies in every corner of the supernatural world—vampires, witches, and Fae. She stands up against evil, even when it’s kicking her ass. So while she may be the underdog, don’t count Mercy out. This coyote’s still got plenty of tricks up her sleeve.

  31. The write-up for Reyes seems a bit off; I definitely wouldn’t call Mercy the obvious choice! On that basis alone — that she’s not a a-hole alpha — I’d vote for her… though I suppose I’m willing to go check out Reyes’ book.

  32. DC says:

It’s MERRRCYYYY all day. Love Reyes (hot hot hot) but Mercy’s been holding it down as the pack leader of one for a while and that gets my respect

  41. Claire says:

    Mercy of course….

  42. Lori A says:

Have MERCY! Out of so very many strong women in our wonderful PNR books, Mercy is a top 3 favorite of mine. She’s tough but loving and protective as HELL of the “people” she has collected and claimed along the way. So…GO MERCY!

  43. Lori A says:

OMG! I just realized that if Mercy wins, she’ll be up against ADAM! Honestly, she would have my vote then too…she kicks more ass than he AND she’s about half his size!

    It’s MERCY for the win!

  44. Betul E. says:

    REYES!!

  45. Diana says:

Reyes is, well…REYES. He’s an all-in-caps kind of “guy”. But Mercy has grown so much as a leader and as a woman in each book, that now she’s the one I’d be proud – and damn glad – to have in my corner. So, MERCY for the win!

  46. Lorri says:

    Mercy

  47. caro says:

This is just not right. But going with Mercy.

  48. Nicole Newman says:

    Mercy!
