VBC Presents: ALPHA SHOWDOWN 2011

Update: The giveaway is now closed, but we still love hearing your feedback. (We may be planning another fun event for later this summer, thanks to your input.)

I had so much fun with the Alpha Showdown, and it’s because you guys made it a blast. (We’ve already been asked about future battles. We like the idea of power couples a la Cat & Bones, Barrons & Mac, Chess & Terrible, Mina & Rhys, etc. Maybe later this summer.) Don’t forget, you have until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, June 2, to vote in the final battle.

As it’s others who made this so fun, I’m honoring some favorites from the Showdown.

AUTHORS

We give special love to those who ain’t too proud to beg. First Ilona Andrews offered up the promise of a novella preview for some Kate and Curran love.

Then Karen Marie Moning upped the ante. Oh, KMM knows how to get you. She promised that if Barrons won the Alpha Showdown she would write a sex scene from JZB’s point-of-view. In KMM’s own words: “It won’t be pretty but it will be…well, let me just say if I’m getting in there for a good look around when the action is happening, I’m taking notes on EVERYTHING.” The woman knows how to work us, doesn’t she?

But a couple authors just wanted to have a little fun. Jeaniene Frost and Ilona Andrews both had characters make it to the semifinals — Bones and Kate Daniels, respectively — but were pretty sure they wouldn’t end up in the final bout together. So, they wrote up the smack talk that would accompany such a hypothetical battle. At one point Bones tells Kate to have Curran explain Chapter 32 to her. It’s hilarious and you can read it here.

COMMENTERS

There have been hundreds of comments during the Showdown, which makes for a very happy VBC. A few favorites:

“ONE VOTE FOR SLUTBAG, RIGHT HERE! She’ll take his ass OUT! hiiiiiii-ya!” – Pamela {Spaz} in support of Anita Blake

“Look, Kate has already proven she can kill gods…” – Kara-Karina in support of Kate Daniels

“All [Curran] has to do is comment on Zsadist’s ‘sweet tats’ and the fight’ll be over with the scarred one down for the count wrapped tight in a fetal position.” – Sara H. in support of Curran

“I don’t care who wins as long as I can be the meat in that SANDWICH !!!!” – Keysha on Curran vs. Barrons

“Cat. Catherine. Reaper. Kitten. All names to describe the most kick ass female in all of paranormal romance. She slices, she dices, she juliennes! Cat is the complete package. Half vamp, vampire killer with a deadly accurate aim, only she could bring Bones to his knees. Cat hasn’t wavered in who she loves either. It’s been one man the entire time. Go Reaper, you get my vote!” – Candace in support of Cat

“I have to say, after the Barrons/Curran showdown and seeing how diehard the Team Andrews fans were, I picked up Magic Bites and I have to say, I’m enjoying the hell out of it. So that’s one serious positive about this contest – I now have another series that I’m pulled into (as my wallet cries out in protest).” – Ali on Barrons vs. Kate Daniels

  2. Andra says:

The best part about the showdown was watching the authors come out with bribes – it’s the fans and readers who benefit =).

I’d love to win Dark Swan.

P.S. I follow you on Facebook.

  3. Marjie Pride says:

yay I know Barrons would win!!!

  4. Trini says:

I’ve been looking for KMM’s books and have finally been told that my local bookstores don’t stock them 🙁
So if i would love to win the first of the Fever series.

  8. Becky says:

Thanks for giving me a great “to read” list. I have read some of these, but now I will read them all. awesome contest!

  9. Susan says:

I loved the alpha battle not only for Barrons winning (JZB is the ultimate alpha) but also for learning about series I had not previously read (Kate Daniels – those fans are dedicated!). And the authors getting involved made it even better. I along with all the other Fever fans are not so patiently waiting for that sex scene. 😉

  10. Lora says:

I just love Jace, he’s one of my all-time favourite characters. But I really don’t see him as a man, more like a boy (and there’s nothing worng with that, he is young). But the alpha male – definetely Barrons. I just finished Dreamfever and I’ll say that I really want him to make me say his name. *gushes*
Can’t wait to get Karen’s bribe, hope she posts it soon.
I just loved this showdown, voted every day. Can’t wait for the next one. You guys did an awesome job.
PS. Following you on Facebook and Twitter

  11. Kim says:

Too bad I haven’t read all of the series. But who can resist Barrons?

  12. Tanyaw1224 says:

This was very fun =) I liked seeing the authors come out and fight along side there characters. They make them so real for us. I loved Barron’s! So glad he won. What a beast 😉 I’d love to win the first book in Larissa Ione’s Demonica series. I have not had the opportunity to read that yet.

I don’t believe for a second non of us all could resist Barrons for a second! Left me craving for more! But with this contest now I’ve found more books to read – woohoo!

  14. Liz Semkiu says:

The alpha showdown was fun because I got to see other readers responses to some of my favorite characters. I really enjoyed the final round because Kate Daniels is awesome and she deserved a very strong competitor. Go team Andrews! The smack talk between Bones and Kate was a hoot! Thanks for the contest.

  15. Joanna W. says:

The best thing about the Alpha Showdown was each showdown itself… seeing who would come out on top. I’ve had Barron from the Fever series on my shelf for a few months now. I own the first and third book, but have yet start the series. Since seeing Barron’s SO hot and popular, I’m need to take him down and devour.

  16. Sofija Kapranova says:

The thing I liked about the Alpha Showdown is the competition itself. And of course it was fun to see people painfully decide between there favorite heroes. It was a tough choise.

  17. Devon Alexander says:

Awesome contest! This has definitely shaken up my TBR list…

  18. Alyssa says:

Reading the arguments for each competitor was one of my favorite parts. They were very well written.

  19. Alpha Showdown was great. I had so much fun, I really hope you do something similar again.
Thank you for letting me be part of it.

  20. Jen says:

O.M.G. This was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. I had a blast reading the arguments for each one. The comments were hilarious. It was so much fun trying to decide between two different characters. There were a few series that I haven’t read yet, but now they’re on my to buy list! I hope you do something like this again!

P.S. I follow you on twitter

  21. Clarissa P says:

It was kinda difficult to vote for some rounds. The Cat and bones ones was insane!!! I loved how all the bloggers championed for their competitors. Very well written pieces and they convinced me to vote for the most kick-ass. This was great fun and I hope to see more showdowns in the future. =D

  22. Marianne says:

Alpha Showdown was great, especially since the ultimate alpha male Barrons won. But I also enjoyed learning about series I had not previously read, gave me suggestions for new books to buy since KMM finished the Fever series. Involving the authors made it even better. Thank you for the great concept.

  23. Tamie aka twilightangel17 says:

I love anything that has anything to do with Barrons. As a friend of mine said ‘The world will come to a standstill the day KMM releases a sex from Barrons POV scene’
    Yup!

  24. Melissa F says:

Loved the Alpha showdown, not only did I love the smack talk in individual bouts between characters I already knew, but it introduced me to a few new ones whose acquaintance I cannot wait to make and have already jumped to the top of my massive TBR mountain. 🙂

I follow Vampire Book Club on Facebook.

  25. Chelsea Rafferty says:

I like the fact that I got to see some fantastic males from series I already read and completely LOVE 😉 I also like learning about new alphas and I’m a Barrons fan but I’ll have to check out some of these other Alpha Males 😉

What I liked about this alpha showdown is getting to know some alpha heroes that I may have not read about yet and finding myself new reads.
