VBC Presents: ALPHA SHOWDOWN 2011

Update: The giveaway is now closed, but we still love hearing your feedback. (We may be planning another fun event for later this summer, thanks to your input.)

I had so much fun with the Alpha Showdown, and it’s because you guys made it a blast. (We’ve already been asked about future battles. We like the idea of power couples a la Cat & Bones, Barrons & Mac, Chess & Terrible, Mina & Rhys, etc. Maybe later this summer.) Don’t forget, you have until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, June 2, to vote in the final battle.

As it’s others who made this so fun, I’m honoring some favorites from the Showdown.

AUTHORS

We give special love to those who ain’t too proud to beg. First Ilona Andrews offered up the promise of a novella preview for some Kate and Curran love.

Then Karen Marie Moning upped the ante. Oh, KMM knows how to get you. She promised that if Barrons won the Alpha Showdown she would write a sex scene from JZB’s point-of-view. In KMM’s own words: “It won’t be pretty but it will be…well, let me just say if I’m getting in there for a good look around when the action is happening, I’m taking notes on EVERYTHING.” The woman knows how to work us, doesn’t she?

But a couple authors just wanted to have a little fun. Jeaniene Frost and Ilona Andrews both had characters make it to the semifinals — Bones and Kate Daniels, respectively — but were pretty sure they wouldn’t end up in the final bout together. So, they wrote up the smack talk that would accompany such a hypothetical battle. At one point Bones tells Kate to have Curran explain Chapter 32 to her. It’s hilarious and you can read it here.

COMMENTERS

There have been hundreds of comments during the Showdown, which makes for a very happy VBC. A few favorites:

“ONE VOTE FOR SLUTBAG, RIGHT HERE! She’ll take his ass OUT! hiiiiiii-ya!” – Pamela {Spaz} in support of Anita Blake

“Look, Kate has already proven she can kill gods…” – Kara-Karina in support of Kate Daniels

“All [Curran] has to do is comment on Zsadist’s ‘sweet tats’ and the fight’ll be over with the scarred one down for the count wrapped tight in a fetal position.” – Sara H. in support of Curran

“I don’t care who wins as long as I can be the meat in that SANDWICH !!!!” – Keysha on Curran vs. Barrons

“Cat. Catherine. Reaper. Kitten. All names to describe the most kick ass female in all of paranormal romance. She slices, she dices, she juliennes! Cat is the complete package. Half vamp, vampire killer with a deadly accurate aim, only she could bring Bones to his knees. Cat hasn’t wavered in who she loves either. It’s been one man the entire time. Go Reaper, you get my vote!” – Candace in support of Cat

“I have to say, after the Barrons/Curran showdown and seeing how diehard the Team Andrews fans were, I picked up Magic Bites and I have to say, I’m enjoying the hell out of it. So that’s one serious positive about this contest – I now have another series that I’m pulled into (as my wallet cries out in protest).” – Ali on Barrons vs. Kate Daniels

Alpha Smackdown 2011 was SO much fun! Let’s do it again.
Loved being able to talk smack on a daily basis and I loved seeing the number of discussions that were started on Twitter and Facebook between readers and by authors.
I was stoked at the added bonus of snippets, previews and hot sex scenes provided by authors that got in on the action.
I follow you through Google Reader, on Twitter (CdnMrs) and on Facebook as of about 5 seconds ago ;).

    Thanks for a great time!!

  19. Deea says:

I really loved the Alpha Showdown! I was smiling the whole time while reading the posts! And the comments! Downright hilarious!

I liked that I had the chance to remember why I loved some characters sooo much (in books that I already read and now just sit there, on the shelf – now I just want to reread them) and to see how much I lost when I didn’t read some other books. Seriously, what was I thinking when I didn’t even pick up the Kate Daniels series?! *thud* It goes high up on my wishlist! And most importantly, it made me understand the idea of love triangles:how is it possible for characters to be drawn to two men in the same time. Yeah, there were rounds when I loved both the characters and it was impossible to vote just one of them!

So, yeah… it was fun. And productive.:D

  26. Ren Puspita says:

To be honest, it’s soooooo fuuuuun!!! This alpha showdown make me forgot eating, sleeping, go to college, and make my heart go faster to know if my pick will win? LOL
I foresee this showdown will be Raphael vs Bones, both my favorites alpha hero. (or maybe some people will wait Bones vs Barrons). But this showdown is surprised me, and yeah, that make it more fun and entertaining! Thanks for VBC and another blogger to make this event. You sure know how to entertain us 😀

Wow, that was awesome. Thanks to the showdown, all the series I haven’t read or started already are on the top of my TBR list. And I just became a new reader to this site and subscribed to the RSS feed! Thanks, it was a lot of fun! I can’t wait to the next one!

  28. Irene Jackson says:

I enjoyed reading about the Alphas the most ,I voted for Kate Daniels all the way but it gave me the opportunity to find out about the others. I will hang my head in shame here and admit that before the showdown started I had never read the series with Barrons in it but that will change !!
    I follow in GFC – irgl7

  29. Meggerfly says:

The showdown was great! I liked it because 1) I learned of some new books and 2) People were so passionate in their choices!

  30. I had a blast with this showdown! Next year, PLEASE put Acheron in there (and maybe Simi too). I think that would shake up some of the rankings. Also, how about one YA Alpha showdown and a separate adult Alpha showdown? Then the Bones v Jace upset wouldn’t have happened.

I follow your blog, and I’m a twitter follower as well. 🙂

  31. Emily W says:

Finding a few new books to add to my already large TBR pile. Ilona got bumped to the top.

  32. Keira says:

I loved seeing the passion readers had for their favorite characters! I enjoyed seeing so many books that I’ve read in the brackets and ones that I had planned on reading have now been bumped up higher on my TBR shelf. The interactions between commenters was awesome and fun to read. YESH! There totally needs to be another show down type thing in the future!!!!! It was pure torture to pick characters over one another but I loved it!

    I follow my email.

(P.S. I find the little message “We dig vampires, not robots” hysterical :D)

  33. Sara says:

Thank you so much for Alpha Showdown! It was so much fun and I discovered so many amazing books series that I must read. I follow you on twitter and facebook for your amazing book reviews and recommendations. Thanks again!

  34. Dee says:

So much fun! I voted on every round 🙂

  35. Judi says:

I loved the showdown, I thought it was a neat idea and original. It was fun reading the descriptions. I also started reading Karen M Moning’s Fever series when I found this blog. That is reason enough to love it.

    I follow on Twitter: @pikasarelove.

  36. Brekka says:

I loved this showdown it gave us an opportunity to show our love…course I cant wait to see inside Barrons head *sigh* I love to find others so passionate about books as I am.

  37. denny says:

I had read almost all the books and it was a hard decision to vote but one of my favorites had a chance to win.It was fun.

  38. iluvsushi says:

This was great fun! Loved all the comments even though some of the criticized my JZB. This has got me interested in some other series. I’m a Moning Maniac so of course I’ve read Fever and Jeaniene Frost, so I think I’ll try Kate Daniels series next. Sounds good.

  39. Erika says:

The Alpha Showdown was great! So, glad you did it. It is so much fun seeing how passionate people get about their favorite books, analyzing the persona of each character, and argueing their superiority. Can’t wait to do this again.

I follow you on twitter (@buttrflysky).

  40. Betsy says:

The match-ups were pretty crazy! I haven’t read Kate Daniels yet, other than a prequel novella in an anthology. This has whetted my appetite to read more about her and Curran! Still, there could be no other winner than JZB.. he’s just too bad@ss!! 😀

  41. Rita says:

Barrons all the way can’t wait to read KMM’s new point of view when Barrons wins the ALPHA Male contest

  42. Celita says:

I found out about this contest from KMM’s twitter, promising our scene if JZB wins (and he WILL)! I’m now following you on twitter and email subscription. This contest got me so excited I was checking it out during a meeting at work, where everyone on my team found out about my love of Science Fiction & Fantasy when they insisted on knowing why I was grinning so much. Through this contest, I have been introduced to other series and authors and have already requested many of them from my library. Unfortunately, I’m in a queue of 34… I think having a power couple contest is a GREAT idea, and also a separate YA contest – no way can little boys compete with BARRONS!

  43. Celita says:

One more thing – if you have read the Fever series but haven’t listened to Bloodrush and Shadowsong, I HIGHLY recommend them! Just One Time is basically what KMM has been promising us, just musically. Not for YA ears, but neither is the Fever series!

  44. Linda Pierce says:

I have now found some new books to read! I do appreciate it…however, I do need time for some kind of life! LOL I am looking forward to the Barron story though. mmmm mmmm good!

  45. Amy says:

This was entertaining to say the least.. some of the comments were hilarious! The Alpha Showdown introd me to Cat&Bones, I inhaled the 5books and 2 side stories in about a week, and the mm mm good Barrons and Vlane

  46. dameolga says:

The comments cracked me up soo much. I’m sure my sister is quite annoyed with my random giggles while I was catching up on the latest showdown news. The best part though was that I got introduced to some interesting new series, namely the Fever series. And I’ve definitely been visiting vampirebookclub a lot since the showdown!

  47. Marla says:

    Barrons Rocks~

  48. Pauline says:

Loved it!! It was terrific to see everybody commenting on all of the characters that I know and love, introduced me to some that I had never read about and certainly will now (and thanks for the opportunity with this awesome giveaway!), and finally, to show my support for KMM’s kick-ass Fever series. And oh yeah, that Barrons guy. 🙂 Who is by the way, unconquerable in all things that matter. 😉

P.S. I follow you on Facebook.

  49. Tonya says:

I didn’t find out about this until the last couple of rounds, but that’s okay b/c I am Barrons all the way!!! He is awesome. But now I have a whole new list of series to read! Yay!

  50. Heather says:

I heard about this showdown from KMM’s blog. Although I knew I would vote for Jericho, because he is the ultimate alpha, it was awesome to be introduced to all these other characters. Thanks for the opportunity! I am now a regular here on your website.
