Book series worth re-reading (a.k.a. admitting our obsessions)

logo

The other night a reader asked us for book recommendations that would be worthy of re-reading. She told us she wanted to limit her budget, so she wanted books that wouldn’t just collect dust. It was all too easy for us to churn out series (and specific novel) suggestions for her. We opened it up to our Twitter followers, too, and many went with the same addictive series we did.

Of course the first words out of our mouth were suggestions to pick up our latest obsession the Downside Ghosts series by Stacia Kane (review of Unholy Ghosts) and singing praises for our other favorite author Richelle Mead and her Vampire Academy series.

Between our choices and some reader suggestions, the top series/books for reading two, three, four, five times over are:

  1. Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series, with especially adoration of the fourth novel, Blood Promise. No matter the book, this young adult urban fantasy series has precise writing, a strong heroine who makes mistakes, a love story that you want to fight for and plenty of action. (Read our review of Spirit Bound.)
  2. Kim Harrison’s Rachel Morgan/The Hollows series. Hero Rachel Morgan is a witch and bounty hunter who lives with a vampire? How can we not be into that? Clever, engaging urban fantasy. (Ed. note: We’ll be posting a review of Dead Witch Walking, the first book in this series, soon, if you need additional coaxing into this series.)
  3. Stacia Kane’s new Downside Ghosts series. These books get better and better in succession and that’s saying something. This dark, gritty urban fantasy series has an unexpected heroine, perfect pacing and a vivid world. We have no problem revisiting the characters in Downside repeatedly.
  4. Maggie Stiefvater’s Wolves of Mercy Falls series. The second novel, Linger, isn’t out yet, but if Shiver is any indication, everyone will be digging further into this YA paranormal romance series. We know you want more of Grace and her wolf.
  5. Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series. Trust us, you’ll want to re-read any book featuring Frost’s characters Cat and Bones.
  6. Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Mysteries/Sookie Stackhouse series. Really, just the earlier novels prove to be re-read worthy, but we could read Dead to the World, book 4, where we finally see another side to Eric – among other things – monthly.
  7. Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series. This one comes from our Twitter followers, with several shout-outs for Bitten, the first book in the series. We haven’t started this one yet, but if you guys say it’s worth moving up the to-be-read list, we’ll do some rearranging.

OK, now it’s your turn. Tell us which series or books you could read over and over by either voting in our poll or commenting below. If we haven’t read the books you suggestion, we’ll add them to the to-read list.

Just a quick note: We want to remind you public libraries are your friends. They are the great equalizer and have librarians will fantastic knowledge. That said, I like to buy books, swap them, etc., but it the cash flow is hurting, hit up your local library.

Without question my two favorite authors are Jeaniene Frost and Patty Briggs. I haven’t seen Briggs mentioned here even though she does have vmapires in each of the Mercy books.

I also love Charlaine Harris, and couldn’t agree more with your statement about the earlier books. I have all ten of the Sookie books, but have not read DITF yet. In Sookie’s world my heart is with Bill. I believe Sookie’s is as well and she will eventually realize this and return to him. If you remove the ravages of the Blood Bond, Bill is the only one she has knowingly said she loved. Her heart still lies with him. I look forward to future Sookie books with high hopes this will come to pass.

As for Jeaniene’s books, I live and breathe them. Love Cat and Bones, they are the most readable couple around. Humor, passion and hot scenes are their forte. But, my heart belongs to Mencheres. He is the most sexy, most powerful, and for me, the most desirable vampire ever.

    • As hard to believe as it is, I haven’t actually read any of Patricia Briggs, though I keep getting the recommendation. I picked up Moon Called and now have it on my TBR shelf.

As for Dead in the Family, the latest Sookie book, you can read our review, but it was definitely a filler book. I like the book a bit heavier on action (Dead to the World and All Together Dead topping my list).

I wanted to second Patricia Briggs. She is by far my favorite author along with Kim Harrison. I also loved the Barb and JC Hendee books.

It’s not a series but A.M. Esmonde’s Blood hunger is worth checking out.
    My review of ‘Blood Hunger’.

Vampire Academy is kind of an obsession with me. It’s the only book series (other than Harry Potter) that i can read over and over. Yes I love Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse but she is such a damsel in distress, and speaking as a 17 yr old Rose is my hero! A sexy girl that kicks major ass, awesome! By far the best read ever!

i definitely agree with this!!!! those are probably the only two series that i can reread as many times as i want and still enjoy =]

  5. Leigh says:

The Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs and the Georgina Kincaide series by Richelle Mead are both excellent re-reads.

  6. Shannon says:

Cassandra Clare’s mortal instruments series and Lili St. Crow’s Strange Angels series are definitely worth rereading

LKH’s Anita Blake serie is the serie i have read the most times of all the series i have read (three times of the whole 18 books) and it’s still awesome. Also, as mentioned above Richelle Mead’s Succubus series is good enough to re-read.

  9. Tara says:

I have read all of Richelle Meads both Succubus and Vamp Acad. , LKHs both Merry and Anita, Charlaine Harris’ Sookie stackhouse also.
Out of all of them.. I think they are all worth reading in their own way. I have also read all of Vamp Diaries and of course the Twilight saga.

Anita – you have to be in the mood for.
Merry – I read them all but admit to flicking past a few bits. All about fairies etc. Sex, of course.
Sookie – is a fun pick up read put down series. Trashy but great!
Richelle meads – both series are fun and an easy read. You dont have to sit there trying to fit it all together.
Vamp Diaries – is fun until about book 4.. then its just blah for me.

    All are worth reading. 😀

  10. Jer says:

I voted for Kim Harrison’s Rachel Morgan/The Hollows series.
It is the BEST ever! I am re-reading for the sixth time in 4 years!
