Night Reigns by Dianne DuvallThank you for joining me today!  And thank you, Chelsea, for welcoming me to Vampire Book Club and helping me celebrate the release of Night Reigns, the second book in my Immortal Guardians paranormal romance series!

If you’ve read Darkness Dawns, you may have already guessed that I’m a big fan of romances that feature lovers who begin as friends.  In Darkness Dawns, Sarah (a music theory professor) rescues a wounded man she finds staked to the ground practically in her backyard and finds herself thrust into a war that erupts between immortals and vampires.  The Immortal Guardian she rescues, Roland, is determined to protect her from his enemies . . . and not just because she intrigues him and makes his heart beat faster.  The two spend nearly every minute together as they work to identity and battle the Immortal Guardians’ new foe.  Does the physical attraction Sarah and Roland feel for each other grow and develop?  Absolutely.  But so does the friendship they find, deepening into love and adding more flare to the fire, as they learn about each other in the quieter moments.  They share likes and dislikes.  They confide in each other their troubling pasts.  And they joke with and tease each other, delighting in the laughter and smiles they evoke despite the dark enemy intent on killing them.

In Night Reigns, the hero and heroine have a rockier beginning, but still manage to find friendship, then love.  Marcus is an immortal who skates the edge, grieving over the loss of a woman he loved for eight hundred years.  Ami, the heroine, has not only experienced losses of her own, she has suffered a terrible, torturous past . . . so torturous she nearly lost her sanity.  But she has been slowly finding her way back.  Now Seth, the leader of the Immortal Guardians, assigns her to be Marcus’s Second, living with him and assisting him by taking care of business he can’t conduct during daylight hours and backing him up at night when he hunts vampires.  Marcus isn’t thrilled with the situation.  Ami isn’t either, but is determined to do her job, thwarting Marcus at every turn when he tries so hard to avoid her it becomes almost a game.

Marcus can’t resist Ami’s charm.  Though they face an enemy who proves more dangerous than the Immortal Guardians ever could have anticipated, Ami and Marcus still find time to talk and tease, learn each other’s pasts, and find friendship that rapidly deepens into love.

Darkness Dawns

Once, Sarah Bingham’s biggest challenge was making her students pay attention in class. Now, after rescuing a wounded stranger, she’s landed in the middle of a battle between corrupt vampires and powerful immortals who also need blood to survive. Roland Warbrook is the most compelling man Sarah has ever laid hands on. But his desire for her is mingled with a hunger he can barely control . . .

In his nine centuries of immortal existence, no woman has tempted Roland as much as Sarah. But asking her to love him is impossible — when it mean forfeiting the world she’s always known, and the life he would do anything to protect.

Night Reigns

Ami isn’t much for trusting strangers.  She has a hard time trusting anyone.  But she’s no coward, and she’s no pushover in the protection department either.  So when she comes across a mysterious warrior taking on eight deranged vampires on his own, she doesn’t hesitate to save his bacon.  Of course, that was before she realized what one little rescue would get her into . . .

Marcus Grayden has been an immortal protector of humanity for eight hundred years, and at the moment he’s not interested in backup.  From the moment Ami arrives in his life, he can’t deny that she’s strong, smart, and extremely skilled at watching his back.  But she’s also destroying his protective solitude and stirring desires he can’t bear to awaken.  After all, whatever her secrets — how can she defeat death itself?

Thank you again for joining me!  I hope you’ll like my Immortal Guardians as they find friends then lovers while battling maddened vampires and darker, even deadlier foes.

    Diane,
I am reading Darkness Dawns for a 2nd time. will a 3rd in the series be coming soon? I will read Night Reigns again. You have left so much that can be expanded in the 3rd book. You really know how to start the action and pull the reader in.

    • Wow! Thanks, Gail! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the series! Phantom Shadows, Book 3, will be released on October 2nd. It’s Bastien’s story. I hope you’ll like it!

  22. gail says:

do you have advice for fledgling authors?

    • 1. Persevere. I received many rejection letters before Darkness Dawns landed me the call and a 3-book contract from Kensington. Dozens of agents passed on it. So don’t let it discourage you if the same happens to you. If you have trouble getting an agent, shop your manuscript yourself like I did.

      2. Though I know many writers have mixed feelings about them, writing contests can be a good way to gauge how readers will respond to your work AND can get your manuscript into the hands of editors and agents who are otherwise hard to reach (if you final).

      3. Since I loved it, you might also want to read Stephen King’s On Writing. It’s great for learning the craft. 🙂

I hope this helps and wish you great success, Gail!

  23. Sharon says:
