Note from VBC: This review assumes you’ve read the previous Kate Daniels novels, but does not provide any spoilers for this or earlier books.

“Shut up,” he told me.

“Promise me.”

“I’m not promising shit,” he said. “I would die before I lost you.”

Midway through Gunmetal Magic, I wanted to find a couple of boudas, my own Doolittle and arrange a spaying and neutering ceremony. Why in the world would two creatures, knowing they were each other’s mates, purposely not commit to one another? Okay, let’s give Raphael some credit. The hesitancy was Andrea’s. But still, Raphael did not make things any easier for our girl.

True masters of storytelling, the husband and wife duo of Ilona Andrews took three complicated storylines and put them together seamlessly in this urban fantasy.

First, there is Andrea’s hesitancy to accept her shapeshifter status, complicated by her no longer being a Knight with the Order as well as a childhood fraught with abuse by her fellow shapeshifters.

Next is the hodgepodge of deities with entitlement complexes who bring more BSC to the Atlanta landscape.

Finishing things off is Raphael, alpha of Clan Bouda, who is mate to Andrea. Sexy as hell (the man embodied all things Bond in a tux in one scene), funny (he definitely took lessons on practical joking of your mate from Curran) and loyal to a fault, Raphael does not want to fight Andrea anymore, but yet he can’t let her go.

Gunmetal Magic is about Andrea learning to accept her place in the Pack. With a few gentle (or not so gentle) shoves in the right direction from Aunt B, Kate, Curran, a young shifter named Ascanio and a volhv named Roman, she may just finally overcome a lifetime of hesitancy.

But this is the writing of Ilona Andrews so there is no easy or direct path to happiness. Is the magic up or down? What is a god? Where did the snake shifters come from? And, most importantly, just when is Doolittle going to get a book? (In all seriousness, I would love to read a Doolittle book and now I think we all need a Roman book. Pretty please with furry sprinkles on top.)

With book one in the Kate Daniels series, Magic Bites, the writing was great. Now, it’s phenomenal. These two are at the top of their game. Their wit is genius, their heroes are drool-worthy, their villains are cringe worthy and their stories are captivating. Andrea and Raphael are about to face a seemingly unbeatable foe and I read this line.

“They built an enormous dog turd,” Raphael murmured.

I laughed until tears ran, woke my poor husband up (a hazard of reading during the middle of the night) and got a really dirty look from my cat. You don’t go through a Kate Daniels book without a good laugh and a big case of goosebumps. I cannot recommend these books enough. Even though I am still a little bitter at a certain overbearing lion for taking the Alpha Showdown away from Bones. Yeah Curran, I’m looking at you buddy.

If you haven’t picked up these books, go ahead and do it. Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I’m going to re-read the entire series.
