Note: While this review is spoiler-free, it makes assumes you have read earlier books in the Demonica/Lords of Deliverance series. If not, please check out the VBC review of Pleasure Unbound.

I’m going to start this review with an explanation. Larissa Ione is one of the exceptions to the rule. You could open up a clean review document and give her a five, right out of the gate.  But this time, I was a little skeeved. Satan actually popped an eyeball out of a prisoner and ate it.  Unholy cow, Batman.

The time in Sheoul was rough. I mean torture, attacks, pain and agony on an unimaginable scale. At times, I was questioning if this was too much. This is a romance, for crying out loud. We need to have some hope for a happy ending.

And then it happened. Our beloved Reaver, father of Ares, Than, Limos and Reseph, fallen angel restored, former doctor in Underworld General Hospital, and rescuer extraordinaire, had Harvester again. This, VBC fans, is when the magic started.

Harvester lost herself, basically, when she became the protector of Reaver’s children. Still an angel in good standing, she had to roam amongst the fallen and the true fallen for so long, it was difficult to decipher her place on the side of the good. She did things that would make toes curl in the hardest of hearts, and the guilt for those things weighs heavily on her.

Reaver still hasn’t recovered the memory he lost thousands of years ago. He knows there is a connection between Harvester and himself. He knows all the connections will be made if he could just open up the lost memories.

Both Harvester and Reaver know they love each other, and they have one hell of a fight on their hands to recover what they once had.

Meanwhile, in true Ione fashion, we get to see our prior beloved characters  Limos, Ares, Than and Reseph figure heavily into the storyline as well as Eidolon, Shade, Sin, Idess and Wraith. Speaking of Wraith, best quote of the entire book belongs to him. Trust me on this.  Wait until you get to his nickname for Reaver. Laughter will ensue.

Reaver is not an easy read. To get their happily ever after, Ione makes her characters earn it. She does something to one of the Horsemen you will NEVER see coming. But at the end of the book, when you have read the last page, there will be significant book hangover. While you are wanting more and figuring out when the next book comes out, this is when you realize why Ione is one of the true masters of the paranormal romance game.

I know you were a little skeeved out by the darkness but I ate it up. I read so many books that talk about hell and/or torture but leave out all the gory details that make you connect with the heartache the characters have suffered. Larissa Ione never leaves out the darkness and I love her for it.

I think I would’ve been disappointed in Reaver if their time in Sheoul had been watered down. I needed that darkness to take him and Harvester into the light and what a glorious light it ended up being. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

You are right – the darkness added to the desperation that Harvester and Reaver both felt. I dropped several F bombs reading the Sheoul scenes though. Larissa does not sugar coat how very hellish that time in Sheoul is.
