Faith Hunter Guest Post & Giveaway: A Writing Diva and her Jewelry

Author Faith HunterNote from VBC/Chelsea: We’re excited to have Faith Hunter on the blog today. Her next Jane Yellowrock book comes out next week, and, well, we’re big fans here at VBC. We’re even giving away a copy of Broken Soul at the end of the post. For now, though, I’m turning it over to Faith.

Except for my jewelry (which I mostly make myself) I am not a diva. Well…maybe a little. I do have a thing for fancy boots, but I go for Western boots by Lucchese, not stilettos by Pick-Your-Big-Name-Shoe-Designer. I don’t dress fancy, but I do go for outfits that say, “Hey you! I’m over here!” I do get my regular pedis with toenails in a clotted blood color. And I do get my hair color from a bottle. Dang. I’m a diva.

Sigh. A high maintenance diva. So dang it, lemme tell you about my jewelry. I started making jewelry for the thriller novel Bloodstone by my pen name Gwen Hunter. The book will be re-released this fall in e-book format. I kept on with the jewelry making during the years when I was focused on the Rogue Mage series, featuring Thorn St.Croix: Bloodring, Seraphs, and Host. Unlike many things I’ve done and learned for research, jewelry making has become habit; I still love it, despite the fact that Jane Yellowrock wears jewelry for protection, not looks, and despite the fact that I haven’t found a way to incorporate my hobby-love into the series in any meaningful way.

Making jewelry, things I give away at signings and contest at book-release time, is therapeutic for me in lots of ways. It’s creative while using a different part of my brain from my word-creative-part-of-brain. It requires focus, but I can listen to books or watch TV while I do it, so it’s relaxing. And then I get to wear it or give it away! So…sigh…I’m a diva. I’m really a diva…

Here are a few pics of my early designs, things I made to wear to Cons and signing, things that would reflect Jane’s heritage, if not her lifestyle. And in the pic of the writing room, the white table you see to the side is the jewelry-making table.
