Faith Hunter Q&A: Soulwood, Nell, and a Big Giveaway

Curse on the Land by Faith Hunter (Soulwood #2) // VBCThe VBC team loves Faith Hunter’s books. We’re excited for Curse on the Land, and you should be, too. The second Soulwood novel releases on Nov. 1 (pre-order here), but Faith shared this Q&A—answer questions from her street team, the Beast Claws—to give us a taste. Read on for insights and your chance to win some seriously sweet prizes.

Question: What happens to the “vampire” oak on church land that was changed when Nell’s healing was done?

Faith Hunter: The tree has changed! Like, totally! Wait until you see what it has become in Curse on the Land! I have a love-hate relationship with that tree!

Question: Will we find out why Pea put a drop of blood on Nell’s finger and chittered at her when Nell had her confrontation in the woods with Paka there?

Faith Hunter: Ohhh. Yes. (writer’s evil chortle…) That one event was a huge part of the story line, and is still being revealed. The totally of the explanation is drawn out and takes the entire trilogy.

Question: Is there something specific about Nell’s woods that they react to her as they do? Other woods she was in didn’t feel the same.

Faith Hunter: Nell fed a body and soul to her woods. They bonded in that moment and Soulwood began to come alive, to become sentient. In Curse on the Land, you’ll see a scene where the land shows some small bit of sentient awareness. Love that wood!

Question: Would you or have you considered the idea of a Wendigo in any of you novels? Could you ever see anything like that appearing as a force of nature.

Faith Hunter: CE Murphy did the wendigo in one of her novels. I think that most anything I could write would be derivative unless I found a way to put my own spin on it. Short answer—I haven’t thought about it.

Question: What is the nature of the bond between Paka and Rick? Nell describes it more like Rick is obsessed with or owned by Paka.

Faith Hunter: Nell understands the concept of being owned. She hates it for Rick, even though sometimes he’s a total PITA. And yes. You’ll find out the answer to this in Curse on the Land in November!

Question: Will we see something wicked developing between the Vampire tree which saved Nell and any of Nell’s sisters or brothers who have the special gift or talent for growing plants?

Faith Hunter: I’m still plotting book three of the trilogy and I keeping that as an option. It is not impossible but not planned out in any form yet.

ABOUT CURSE ON THE LAND

Before Nell Ingram met skinwalker Jane Yellowrock, she had no one to rely on, finding strength only in her arcane connection to the dark woods around her. But now she has friends in the newly formed PsyLED team to keep her grounded — even if being part of the agency responsible for policing paranormals comes with dangers of its own…

After training at the PsyLED academy, Nell returns home to her woods to find the land feeling sick and restless. And that sickness is spreading. With the help of her team, under the leadership of agent Rick LaFleur, Nell tries to determine the cause. But nothing can prepare them for the evil that awaits: an entity that feeds on death itself. And it wants more….
