Let’s talk favorite kissing scenes

I’m starting to narrow down the list for this year’s most swoon-worthy heroes list. (Didn’t know VBC gave up the hotties every year? Silly you. See the 2011 and 2010 picks, respectively.) Each year I include great young adult heroes on the list and people ask me why. The tweets and Facebook comments roll in asking how I could compare some kissing scene in a YA book to the hot-and-heavy goodness in an adult romance. The answer is simple: Sexual tension.

Romance in young adult books is exciting because it offers up the first time. It’s overwhelming and messy and so, so consuming. And, to be quite honest, there is something to be said for the slow build to an epic kiss.

I know we have a mixed bag of Twilight lovers and haters here, but regardless of your stance I think we can agree the first kiss between Edward and Bella in the film version was brilliant. The anticipation of their lips meeting captivates a viewer, much like the books can. I swear, every time I’m flipping through the channels on TV and Twilight is on, I stop to watch this scene. Every time I get chills. As a matter of fact, I’m embedding the long version here, so everyone else can enjoy the kissing.

Now that you’ve had a visual kissing fix, I want to know what kissing scenes are your favorites.
They can be from adult books, of course. There are some great first kisses out there. (My first thought there is Georgina and Seth from Richelle Mead’s Georgina Kincaid series.)

  1. I could not agree with you more on the sexual tension! It is one of the biggest reasons I love YA. The innocence and inexperience brings such excitement!

  2. Julie says:

The kiss that immediately comes to mind is the first kiss between Chess and Terrible in “Unholy Ghosts”. That was one hot scene which was so perfect for the two characters. Loved it!

  3. Isalys says:

I agree! One of the best qualities of reading any romance novel, be it YA or adult is the sexual tension. The slow build-up of the desire, the intimacy, the relationship! To me, it’s of the very things that makes a kissing or love scene great.

I just finished EASY by Tammara Webber and it easily (no pun intended) had one of the best first kisses I have ever read ! I’d be a liar, liar, pants on fire if I said that that scene didn’t actually set my pants on fire a little 😉 lol

  4. @Smash – EXACTLY.

@Julie – I may need to go re-read that one. You’re right, there was such a buildup of tension leading to that one.

@Isalys – Should I just add it to my TBR now? 😀

  5. Isalys says:

@Julie: Chess and Terrible are one of my fave couples and their first hook-up was HAWT!!

@Chelsea: Yes! I’m not normally a big reader of Contemporary and this was my first New Adult novel, but it really did live up to the hype 🙂 I highly recommend it!

  6. Amanda says:

I’m a bit late to the Obsidian party, but I just finished it, and after all the bickering and tension and daaayyymm that porch scene, when Katy and Daemon FINALLY kiss it’s just all sorts of explosions. The one in Onyx, in the library, was even better.

Also, the scene in Laura Kaye’s Hearts in Darkness, when McKenna and Caden have their first kiss, in pitch dark? Loved it.

  7. Mel Thomas says:

My favorite (which seriously upped the sexual tension between them) was the Mal + Chrysabelle + piano scene in Kristen Painter’s Bad Blood. Holy jeebus was it hot! Hotter than a lot of full on sex scenes I’ve read.

As for YA, there was a seriously smexy kissing scene between Jack and Evie in Kresley Cole’s Poison Princess. Read it last weekend and was quite impressed with it and most especially the scrumdiddlyumptious Jack. *swoons*

  8. @Amanda – The Hearts in Darkness one was very good, you’re right!

@Mel – THE POOL SCENE. Before everything fell apart, nom nom nom on Jack.

  9. Sophie Y says:

The stand out kiss from a YA book for me is from Kelley Armstongs Darkest Powers series, the build up was brilliant, it didn’t just come out of the blue! When it finally happened, it was hot and sweet at the same time!

As far as adult books, I have to agree Chess and Terrible would be at the top of my list, followed by Jaz and Vayl from Jennifer Rardins Jaz Parks series, again because of the build up!

  10. Spaz says:

MERCY AND ADAM!!!! That buildup and their first kiss is one of my most favorite couples and scenes ever. *SWOON*

  11. My fave kiss was from Cricket and Lola by Stephenie Perkins 🙂 Love they grew up knowing each others and the tension , and he was a good boy. I also love Perry & Aria from ever night series. I also love Tucker and Clara …and they mention Anne of Green gables 🙂 win

For adult I think from Packard & Justine . I agree with Chess and Terrible too.

  12. Lisa says:

    Cat and Bones….damn.

  13. Lilian says:

I agree with all of you girls. Other fave: When Kate and Curran finally kiss in Kate Daniels series! It was one of the most expected ever. And Mac and Barrons first (real) kiss, in Fever Series, too! Just want to read it all over again.

  14. Kalynn says:

Oh so many good ones…I need to add Todd and Kaylee’s first kiss in If I Die. There was such slow build up to that relationship and all kinds of tension.

  15. Brittany says:

I have to say the best kissing scene was between Sydney and Adrian in The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead

  16. Rachel says:

I LOVE the kiss scene in Twilight. I may or may not have watched that scene on YouTube a few hundred times.

  17. Alison Robinson says:

lots of good ones. Have to agree to Chessie-babes and Terrible and Mac and Barrons and Sydney and Adrian – three of my favourite series

  18. I have to say, any Bella and Edward kissing scene is my favorite 🙂 I’m a sucker for a good vampire romance.
