Love letter to Reyes (Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series)

If you read Jo’s review of Darynda Jones’ first Charley Davidson book First Grave on the Right, you know she loved it. The fun and snarky tone won her over, and she swooned hard for the hero Reyes. It only made sense to let her write him a Character Love Letter—one that wouldn’t step on Charley’s toes too much.

First Grave on the Right by Darynda JonesDear Reyes,

I know we haven’t know each other very long (totally my fault), but what I can say, you make quite an impression! I know, I know, you got tons of letters from women when you were in prison, but before you screw this up and throw it in the bin, just know I’m not asking you to be mine. Your heart lies with another and that’s okay… I guess I just wanted to say, I see you and I’m on your side.

I could talk about what everyone else sees. The face that would give anyone in Hollywood a run for their money. Or the mesmerizing brown eyes that make women go weak at the knees. Or the gorgeous body, a mixture of muscles, tanned golden skin and intricate tattoos (or what you can do with that body, even in dreams, yeah Charley told me). But I know all that means nothing to you (apart the dream thing I would imagine *wink*). And then there are those who only see your past (the ones of a ghostly persuasion), the ones hung up on the whole son of Satan thing but hey, nobody’s perfect!

What I see is a man who walked away from everything he knew, who took on hell and literally went to the ends of the universe to be with the woman he loves. And, as if that wasn’t enough, when the life you planned was cruelly snatched away from you, replaced with more pain and injustice, you fought. You fought for those you love, suffering pain and loneliness to make sure they were safe, even when you were spending 10 years in prison for something you didn’t do.

It’s been such a hard journey for you and you’ve made some decisions that have people questioning your motivation but to me it’s crystal clear. Yes there is a lethal side to you and I’m not gonna lie, watching you fight is hella sexy. You can be ruthless, sometimes playing fast and loose with the moral lines but it’s with laser like focus on what is most important to you… Your love. That makes you pretty damn amazing in my eyes.

So yeah, I see you and I’m on your side.

(And if this thing with Charley doesn’t work out, call me, maybe… Or drop into my dreams, whichever is easiest)

Yours always, waiting hopefully

Jo

Nice choice, Jo. Very nice. If we can get out hands on a couple of kegs of coffee, maybe we could distract Charley. I can totally help with that. 😉

I’ve got the cookies. I’m too old for Reyes, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to ogle him.
