Marlene Perez Guest Post: Nyx’s (kind of) love letter to Elizabeth

The hero of Marlene Perez’s Strange Fates isn’t exactly your standard hero. So, he wasn’t willing to write a traditional love letter for Elizabeth in our Character Love Letters event. However, if you read on you’ll know what he believes in, and what to expect from the first Nyx Fortuna book, which releases on March 5.

Strange Fates by Marlene PerezLove? I don’t believe in love. I don’t believe in love at first sight, where two people’s eyes meet across the room and they just know they’re meant to be together forever.  I do believe in lust at first sight, where two people know they’re meant to be together for just one night.

I don’t believe in a love that’s meant to be, something ordained by Fate. Everyone I’ve ever loved has been taken from me by the Fates. I’ve been hunted for my entire life, simply for being born a male into the Wyrd family line.

What do I believe in? I believe in revenge. It’s the only thing that’s kept me going for two hundred years, ever since the Fates killed my mother because she hid my thread of fate. My mother was Lady Fortuna, the fourth and forgotten Fate. Without my thread of fate, the Fates couldn’t kill me, so they killed her instead. Now, I’m doomed to wander the earth, searching for my thread of fate. When I find it, I can finally end it, but on my own terms.

I came to Minneapolis to settle a debt with my aunts, the three Fates. I didn’t expect to meet Elizabeth Abernathy, the mysterious mortal who helped me or Willow, the naiad. I can’t let my emotions get in the way of my pursuit of revenge. But you know what they always say? Fortune favors the bold.
