Nina Croft Loves Vampires. Here’s Why.

Blood and Metal by Nina Croft // VBCNote from Chelsea/VBC: Vampire Book Club is pretty big on the fanged folk. We do have the word vampire in our name, after all. So we get extra excited when authors not only write about vampires, but love them the same way we do.

Nina Croft loves vampires like we love vampires. Bonus: She writes some awesome ones in her Dark Desires series. The latest book Blood and Metal is out now, and we snagged her to talk about all the reasons vampires are straight-up the best. With that, I’m turning it over to Nina:

My Dark Desires series is a mixture of science fiction, paranormal, and romance. It follows the adventures, romantic and otherwise, of the crew of the space ship, the Blood Hunter.

The first book in the series, Break Out, introduced us to Ricardo Sanchez the owner and pilot of the Blood Hunter. Rico is a 1600-year-old vampire. He’s also gorgeous, and he knows it, and he uses it. He’s found the one thing that keeps the darkness firmly locked inside him is sex. So it’s just as well he’s inordinately fond of sex.

I read Dracula as a child and I grew up on scary vampire movies, but it was only when I read Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice that I realized vampires could be the heroes (sort of) rather than the villains, and they could be super-sexy.

So what makes them so hot…?

  • I’ve always loved a bad boy hero and for me they are the ultimate bad boys.
  • The whole biting, phallic-fang thing – okay a little pervy, but it’s like a whole different kind of penetration.
  • They have fierce, overriding needs—and who doesn’t want to be needed?
  • They never look old.
  • But actually some of them have lived a really long time—just think of all that experience.
  • They’re loners and they’ve got the whole brooding thing off to an art.
  • They hang around at night, in the dark, where anything can happen…
  • They hold the key to immortality.
  • And if all those reasons aren’t enough how about Eric from True Blood, or Spike from Buffy, or Angel or Lestat…

But do the same reasons hold true if the vampire is a woman? Are female vampires equally hot?

The vampire in Blood and Metal, my latest release, and book 5 in the Dark Desires series, is the heroine of the story. Daisy, the co-pilot of the Blood Hunter, has been in the series from the start. She was a nice girl, if a little green—literally—as she’s a genetically modified plant/human hybrid. I knew Daisy would get her own book one day, but she was always a little too nice for me. Right up until book 4, Temporal Shift, when Rico changed her into a vampire to save her life. Now Daisy is fighting the darkness, and always hungry for blood (she’s also no longer green as all her chlorophyll has died from lack of sunlight). She’s desperate to hold on to the girl she used to be, and scared she’ll never find anyone of her own as they’ll all be put off by the blood-sucking monster thing.

Fergal, my hero certainly finds her sexy including the fangs. Here’s a little snippet:

Would he ever trust her with his dick in her mouth? Not likely, and not in the time they had together. She must have gotten what he was thinking—a grin curved her lips, and she flashed him one sharp white fang. His dick didn’t care. It jerked again, and he grabbed it in his fist and squeezed. His balls ached; he needed to be inside her soon. He tried to tell himself that it had been a long time and that’s why he felt so driven, but he knew it was more than that. Daisy touched him somewhere no one else ever had. It made him uneasy, but he’d worry about it later.

So what do you find sexy about vampires?

About Blood and Metal

Copilot of the Blood Hunter, Daisy is a newly-turned vampire, and she’s hungry. Really hungry and it’s interfering with her plans for revenge. Unfortunately, the only thing that can distract her from said hunger is sex…which is a problem when she can barely refrain from draining any man dry within moments. But old flame Fergal Cain might just be the sexy-assed solution to her problem.

Part human, part cyborg, and with a poison coursing through his system, Fergal’s running out of time to find the scientist who has the cure. Unfortunately for him, the misfit crew of the Blood Hunter put a serious kink in his plans. And if the poison doesn’t kill him, the hot little vamp he can’t resist might do the honors herself…

About Nina Croft

Nina Croft grew up in the north of England. After training as an accountant, she spent four years working as a volunteer in Zambia, which left her with a love of the sun and a dislike of nine-to-five work. She then spent a number of years mixing travel (whenever possible) with work (whenever necessary) but has now settled down to a life of writing and picking almonds on a remote farm in the mountains of southern Spain.

Nina writes all types of romance, often mixed with elements of the paranormal and science fiction.

Thanks so much for hosting me here at the Vampire Book Club – and yes I do love vampires – they are still my favorites after all these years!

  4. I have loved vampires since I was a teenager and saw “Dracula” starring Bela Lugosi on late-night TV. Since vampires are now written as sexy good-guy hunks who are often heroes along with the implied danger – they bite, a big turn-on – I love them even more! I may stray to angels and other immortals in my paranormal romance reading but I always come back to the vamps, and Nina Croft is one of the best at writing them. In her Dark Desires series she gives me everything I want in my vampires and I’m looking forward to reading Blood and Metal, which I bought the day it was released.
