**While we tried to avoid specific spoilers for this particular book, events of the prior novels are referenced freely. **

Each Vampire Academy novel advances in tone and depth as the characters age. In terms of time, only six months has passed from the beginning of the first novel to the closure of Shadow Kiss, book three. But the characters have survived immense trials, and the third book is far more about self discovery and defining one’s future self than the earlier books.

Lissa is fully embracing her role as the last in the royal Dragomir line, while simultaneously learning how to use spirit more fully with Adrian’s help. Christian is trying to define his future with Lissa. He fears the cloud that comes with the Ozera name will taint her at the Royal Court. His insecurities that he isn’t good enough cloud his decisions.

And Rose, oh Rose: She’s grown up so much since the events of Spokane. She’s discovering new effects of being shadow kissed, though not fully understanding them. She begins to battle with her future role. Could she ever come first? Could she have a romantic relationship, if her sole concern is protecting Moroi?

Rose and Dimitri’s relationship is firmly defined. And you can’t help but smile reading the passages when the two get to spend precious moments alone together.

Shadow Kiss is a huge turning point for the Vampire Academy series. The Strigoi threat overwhelms the school and the events of the battles will change things for Rose and the Moroi world permanently.

We’re going to turn additional comments over to some of our Re-Read Challenge participants. But first let’s all just agree the event in the cave was a heartbreaking ‘throw the book’ moment, yes?

What I enjoyed the most in Shadow Kiss was the emotional intensity: Rose’s fears about not being able to handle the side effects of Lissa’s magic, her guilt over Mason, her growing love for Dimitri and then the ultimate heartbreak and devastation (which I’m sure Richelle Mead will still be able to up in the next book) were wonderfully done, it took the reader on an overwhelming emotional journey. – Stella (Ex Libris)

The book is amazing, having to choose between the love of your life or your best friend it’s intense. This book is one on my favorites in the series if i had to choose one there are a lot of cute Rose/Christian moments and i love Adrian’s one liners, and of course all the Dimitri and Rose action! – Carly

Recommended for romance and action lovers. – Kelsey

This has to be the best book out of all of them. This book contains A lot of fighting, romance and even sadness. I re-read this book so many times… – Alyssa

  1. i think this book was one of my favorites of the whole serious. I enjoyed it because the premise of the series was already set with book one and two and book three was just character growth. The way rose matures is amazing, she takes the whole world on her own. She’s sacred but strong like always . her relationship with dimitri matures as well i felt she was no longer acting like a child and playing games like in frostbite. dimitri shows how deeply he feels for her and how much he wants to be with her. even the dramatic ending was so important because it was bound to happen but it just showed how they are equals and how meant for each other they are. i loved this book

I just finished the entire series. I had heard about the book before but didn’t want to read a YA book, preferring a little more risque books. Till I saw the Vampire Book club read a little about the new release and contest here. So I thought I’d give Vampire Academy a try. I was not dissapointed!! SOOOO happy I read the books! Book 5 broke my heart but so did book 3 and 4?! I had been rooting for Dimka until Adrian came along. Not so sure now? Can’t wait for the final book. Thanks for opening up another chapter of Vampires for me Vampire Club!!!

    • I’m so happy to hear that, Jeanette! I think Richelle Mead’s writing — whether in her adult series or in Vampire Academy — is universal. As the series grows, so do our characters. I often think the series name hurts it in terms of more adults being willing to pick it up.

I, too, am dying to find out what is in store for Rose, Dimitri, Adrian, Lissa, etc. in LAST SACRIFICE.

The cave was so sad, I could feel Roza’s heart breaking and not being able to save him or go back for him. Just when the 2 were figuring things out. Didn’t see that coming.

  4. A definitely very good submit by you my pal. I’ve bookmarked this web page and can appear back again following several days to examine for virtually any new posts that you simply make.
