Read Along – The Immortal Who Loved Me by Lynsay Sands [PART 4]

Note from Chelsea/VBC: We’re excited to be doing another read along here at VBC, and as I explained Monday the Argeneau series is such a great fit. The Immortal Who Loved Me works as a standalone, so it’s okay if you haven’t ever read another book in the series. Plus, if you participate in our discussions, you’re entered to win the complete set of Argeneau novels by Lynsay Sands. That’s 21 books. Wow, right? Okay, I’m handing it over to Jannelle now. Let’s talk vampire romance.

After some life-changing news, Sherry takes a break from all of the mind-probing immortals. Taking some time to gather her thoughts, she reflects on her past and how it relates to her future. Then stumbling upon a group of immortals musing about how they can solve the mystery of who exactly has been the ever-present immortal in Sherry’s life, Sherry doesn’t really like what she hears and runs away. Thankfully, she doesn’t get too far before Basil catches up to her.

As mentioned in the third part of the novel, there are a lot of minor events that start to become part of the bigger picture. There were a few things towards the beginning of the novel that left me with a few questions and now is when everything is getting answered. I love how everything comes together, seamlessly. After the confrontation with the mysterious immortal, Leo finds Sherry and soon ensues our climactic fight scene. And then while some issues are let resolved there are plenty left unresolved to keep us on our toes for the next novel.

The fourth part in our read along concludes our review of The Immortal Who Loved Me. This is also where I believe we find out where the name of the novel comes from and it is not what I originally thought it was. In case you haven’t read this far yet, I won’t spoil it for you.

Jannelle’s Final Thoughts: I love the large family presence in the novel. While it is definitely too many characters for me to keep track of, it’s nice to see how big their immortal family is and how there seems to be a back story with most of the characters. Is this something that interests you—reading a story where almost every character holds the promise of a new story?

The more I read, the more I realized how little Sherry actually speaks. I’m not entirely sure if it’s because the rest of the immortals can read her mind or if she’s naturally introverted and used to working things out by herself. What do you think? I’m thinking it’s a little bit of both. Damn those nosy immortals (though it does keep things simple since nothing has to be repeated out loud).

Lynsay Sands Read AlongOverall, I’m giving The Immortal Who Loved Me 4 stars. I think this is a great read for both fans of the Argeneau Series as well as newbies like me who are discovering this series through this novel. World building isn’t overwhelming and the characters are unique and familiar enough to get you interested in this paranormal world. Now to just catch up with the 20 other books in the series!

Amy’s Final Thoughts: I struggled a little in the beginning figuring out the tone of the book. For me, the opening scene with Leo and the hostages in Sherry’s store was very serious, but as the book goes on (along with Sherry’s often delightfully funny inner monologue) I felt like the book was more light-hearted. I agree with Jannelle regarding the large family presence. I think Lynsay Sands did a great job of introducing so many characters and making them pretty distinctive from one another without overwhelming the main Sherry/Basil storyline. I would have liked more from the confrontation at the end with Leo because I think it’s built up so much but in the end I felt it was overshadowed by the revelations about Sherry’s family and her history. Overall, I too give it 4 stars. Immortal was a good read and it definitely interests me in going back and catching up with the rest of the series.

I absolutely love this series I’ve read them all so many times many of them need to be replaced

I had to catch up, so I read Vampire Most Wanted, then this one. I liked the humor in this book, some of Sherry’s dialog and Bricker’s dialog were pretty funny. I also liked catching up with many of the family members that have not been seen in the past few books. Leo was introduced in one of the earlier books (book 11?) and popped up now and again, so I thought the focus on him was a bit short at the end.

I love the humor in Lynsay’s Argeneau series. Amazing that there are already 21 books in the series!

  4. Sarah E says:

As always, I love the humor in this series, and I love the back and forth teasing and wordplay!

  5. Raine says:

I’ve been a huge fan of this series from book one, admittedly some of the books were very repetitive to me and I almost was going to stop reading it thinking they’d hit the end of the line, that they would all start to be the same story with different names. Luckily the ruthless has gad it’s ups and downs but I still enjoy it. I haven’t read the most recent and I really hope I enjoy it.
