From VBC’s Chelsea: We’ve covered the best books of 2013, but we’re ready to look forward here at VBC. There are so many wonderful reads waiting for us in 2014. To help you get excited for new books, we’re going to post our reviewers’ most anticipated 2014 books. Add your favorites in the comments. Jo goes for the best urban fantasy, FYI. (See Amy’s, Krista’s, Amanda’s, Mary’s, Amber’s and Candace’s picks.)

Broken Blade by JC DanielsJO’S MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS FOR 2014

1. The Forever Song by Julie Kagawa

The Immortal Rules sucked me in. The Eternity Cure blew me away. I have no idea where The Forever Song will take me but I’m pretty certain I will love the journey. With the highly emotionally ending to the last book, it isn’t likely to be an easy path for vampire Allie in this YA dystopian fantasy. While I’m looking forward to diving back into the beautifully built world, it’s watching these characters grow and adapt that has this book on my list. It doesn’t hurt that there was a huge plot development right at the end of The Eternity Cure that is certain to cause epic shockwaves; bring on the fallout!

Releases April 15, 2014. Pre-Order The Forever Song

2. Throne of Glass #3 by Sarah J. Maas

It may not have a title yet, but I can tell you I am absolutely counting down the days till the release of this book. I’ve no doubt I’ll finish it in one sitting or that it will make my heart beat faster and make me tear up. I ADORE everything about this series featuring a 17-year-old assassin in a gorgeously built fantasy world. New horizons and long forgotten pasts stretch out in front of Celaena, promising more adventure for us readers. If you’re a fan young adult/new adult, of fantasy epics, or just awesome story telling then I urge you to pick this series up.

Releases 2014.

3. Broken Blade by J.C. Daniels

The last quarter of the second book in this series was brutal to say the least. My heart broke for Kit, and while I’m sure Broken Blade will have it’s fair share of tough-to-read parts too, I want to be there to root for her. With Kit struggling to come to terms with the after effects of her horrendous ordeal, I’m hoping we get to uncover more of her fascinating Aneira heritage. This is a great gritty urban fantasy series, with a plethora of supernaturals, plenty of politicking and bags of action.

Releases Jan. 6, 2014. Pre-Order Broken Blade

4. Bitter Spirits by Jenn Bennett

Whilst most of the books on my list are continuation of series, there’s something exciting about jumping into a brand new world and getting to know a whole new set of characters. I’m really enjoying historical fiction at the moment, so a paranormal series set in 1920s San Francisco sounds right up my street. From what I can see from the blurb, it involves mediums, haunted bootleggers and jazz filled speakeasies… Count me in! I’ve not read anything from Jenn Bennett before but I’ve heard great things, so I’m excited to start.

Releases Jan. 7, 2014. Pre-Order Bitter Spirits

5. Sixth Grave on The Edge by Darynda Jones

Three words: Post-It Note.

Releases May 20, 2014. Pre-Order Sixth Grave on the Edge

  1. Bitter Spirits looks so good. Curious to see Jenn’s take on the ’20s.

  2. Amy says:

The Throne of Glass series has been on my TBR list forever. I need to finally start on those. I always hear such great things about them.

    • Jo says:

You definitely should Amy, they’re awesome! Would recommend picking up the 4 prequel novellas first though, as they give a huge amount of backstory. I think they are coming out in a single binding in March (The Assassin’s Blade), but all available individually on ebook at the mo 🙂

  3. JenM says:

Jenn Bennett’s Arcadia Bell series is fantastic (so sad it is ending), so Bitter Spirits is definitely at the top of my list.
