From VBC’s Chelsea: We’ve covered the best books of 2013, but we’re ready to look forward here at VBC. There are so many wonderful reads waiting for us in 2014. To help you get excited for new books, we’re going to post our reviewers’ most anticipated 2014 books. Add your favorites in the comments. Mary picked fun urban fantasy and more than one epic read. (See Amy’s, Krista’s and Amanda’s picks.)

Shattered by Kevin HearneMARY’S MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS FOR 2014

1. Shattered by Kevin Hearne

Atticus and his crew may have survived their last dangerous adventure but the Norse apocalypse is fast approaching. With the Morrigan gone, Atticus’ get-out-of-death-free-card is no longer in play and he is quite vulnerable with so many deities gunning for him. What will Shattered bring for our Druids and their hounds? I can’t wait to find out!

Releases June 17, 2014. Pre-Order Shattered

2. The King by J. R. Ward (April 1, 2014)

I am an avid re-reader of books that I really like. The first eight books in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series are the books that I return to the most. That being said, I have not enjoyed the last several books and am really hoping that this book will be a return to the style and story that the earlier books had.

Releases April 1, 2014. Pre-Order The King

3. The Forever Song by Julie Kagawa

The end of The Eternity Cure was really a doozie. She left the reader hanging, really hanging, and desperate to find out what will happen next. What does the future (or the author) have in store for Allie and Zeke? We’ll have to wait a couple more months to find out.

Releases April 15, 2014. Pre-Order The Forever Song

4. Written in My Own Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon

This author loves to take the last 50 pages of book (which really isn’t much in a 1,000-page whopper) and turn everything on its head. The end of A Breath of Snow and Ashes left us with Jem being kidnapped, Roger leaving Bree and Amanda to go through the stones and find him, everyone thinking Jamie was dead, Claire and Lord John getting Married (eek!), and Jenny coming to live on this side of the pond. We have really been waiting for the $#!% to hit the fan for three years and I know Ms. Gabaldon will not disappoint. If you have not read Outlander, you’ve just barely got time to plow through the books leading up to this one.

Releases June 5, 2014. Pre-Order Written in My Own Heart’s Blood

  1. Amy says:

I whole heartedly agree with Written in My Hearts Own Blood. I’m looking so forward to everything turning around from where Ms. Gabaldon left us at the end of the previous book. I can’t believe it’s been over three years. I appreciate the time she takes on the books to make sure everything is how it’s supposed to be, but the wait is torture (especially given her penchant for the last 50 pages as you mention above).

    • Mary says:

She really turned everything upside down at then end of that one. I’m so spoiled by authors who manage to turn out a book or two every year, but her books are really worth the wait!

  2. I can’t wait for The Forever Song. That was quite the ending on The Eternity Cure and a year is so long to wait.

    • Mary says:

I love this author. She throws some curve balls, but I get the sense that she has the end all planned out. I can’t wait for her next book in this series or the Iron Fey.
