A lot’s changed in the world since the DarkRiver and SnowDancer packs formed their alliance. Psy have made their way into the packs, mating with some of the members; Silence has fallen; the Human Alliance has proven they deserve to be seen as a power and a threat; friendships and bonds and alliances have formed and solidified.

There’s a lot of attention on the child of DarkRiver’s alpha couple. Naya’s half Changeling, half Psy, and there are those out there that want her for their own dark purposes. But Lucas and Sascha are fiercely protective of their cub, and whoever wants her will have to go through Psy, wolves, and leopards to get to her.

For an ensemble book, I was surprised by how cohesive the story turned out to be. Using Naya and her unique abilities as the glue that holds all the threads together was a smart move, because it brings in a lot of the different pieces from the previous books. We catch up with all our favorite couples (Sigh…Kaleb) and get a deeper look at the BlackSea Coalition. One of Miane’s pack is missing, and she calls on DarkRiver, SnowDancer, the Arrows, and even the Human Alliance to help. Combining it with the hunt for whoever’s targeting Naya keeps the story from falling too far into the ‘Where are they now?’ trap.

I loved seeing how Hawke and Sienna’s relationship has matured as they settle into their mating. Despite their age differences, Hawke is very much aware of Sienna’s abilities. It might kill him to do so, but he’ll use them. And I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some BlackSea books in the future…and maybe a few humans in the mix. There’s a minor subplot involving the PsyNet and the Es that will have a strong ripple effect through the next arc of the series.

Plus, adorableness. There’s Naya, of course, learning to growl and pounce like the cat she is. And the pupcubs. THE PUPCUBS. Their impending arrival makes for some fun and touching scenes for Mercy and Riley and their families. Then there’s Ben, and Julian and Roman, plus the Arrow children…lots of mischief to be had, and I was surprised by how entertained I was by their antics.

And I have to say…I’ve already read this book twice, and Nalini Singh made me ugly cry TWICE, in the exact same spot both times. It was a necessary moment for the characters in question, and again, it has the potential to ripple well into the next arc.

Allegiance of Honor could have been a mess, and it’s a testament to Singh’s skill that it wasn’t. While I thought the ending was a little too clichéd, it’s an otherwise solid installment in the series, giving longtime fans the chance to catch up old characters and easing us into this new post-Silence world. Change has just begun for the Changelings, the Psy, and the humans, and while it might not be smooth, it’s definitely going to be interesting.

I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t read any Nalini Singh, I’m definitely putting her on my tbr pile 🙂

Great Review. I like what you said about the story really feeling cohesive when, with all the characters, it could have been a total mess. I completely agree with you on that. Nalini Singh did really well featuring such a huge cast of characters in this one. Plus PUPCUBS finally!!

I’m very excited to see where the series goes from here, I am hoping for some BlackSea characters to get a book.

OMG, OMG – the FEELS!!!!!! I think everyone’s going to cry there – how can we not? Nalini even brought back, and tied up loose ends that I’ve been curious about for YEARS!! *diving right back into the beginning again*

I’m super curious to know if anyone else cried in the same spot I did. There were were a couple of spots that got me choked up, but just one where actual tears were involved!

  6. I’ve just started the book on Kindle and am re-familiarizing myself with all the couples, relationships, political developments, children, etc. from the previous novels. It’s been a year since Shards of Hope but everything’s coming back and I’m already falling under the spell of the characters again. I know this will be a great read – IMO Nalini is the best writer in the paranormal genre – period!
