Note: While this review will be spoiler free, it may contain spoilers for previous books in the series. Check out our reviews of the first two books Royal Street and River Road.

The third in the urban fantasy Sentinels of New Orleans series, Elysian Fields sees wizard DJ face her most powerful adversaries, highest stakes and toughest choices yet.

Picking up a month after the events of River Road, DJ is still recovering from her run in with a killer nymph. There’s no time for rest though when you’re now the sole Sentinel for the supernatural hot bed that is New Orleans. A serial killer is terrorizing the city, appearing to be a copycat of the infamous early 20th century ‘Axeman’. Of course DJ knows all to well that it could actually be the man himself, traveling from the beyond to carry on his killing spree.

When the killer sets his sights on her, DJ must utilizes all her abilities, as well as all her connections to track him down before he finds her.

With each installment of the this series Johnson adds new layers to the world, expanding and enriching it. I love the direction it’s taking and find the writing style incredible vivid yet very accessible. Elysian Fields introduces both the elusive Vampires and Elves, each bringing with them political agendas that DJ soon finds herself caught up in. There a multitude of plots, all linked to different supernatural factions that weave together into a really really well paced read.

The Axeman plot was my favorite so far, packed with sinister mystery. I particularly liked the idea that, as he is a member of the historical undead, his power grew the more media coverage he received. There was plenty of other action going on, with a pretty huge plot point happening near the beginning of the book. Everything in DJ’s world has the potential to change and I couldn’t wait to find out how it came together. The enigmatic Rand is back in full mysterious mode and while I had my suspicions, I was just as intrigued and infuriated by him as DJ.

DJ learns a lot about herself, particularly concerning her heritage as she takes lessons in elven magic. It’s been a tough road for her since Royal Street, losing so much but she seems to have really grown into her authority and confidence when facing powerful supes.

The only thing that didn’t quite work for me was the romance. I said in my review for River Road that I hoped DJ would make a choice. Well she does, and while I was initially happy, as the plot went on it began to fall a little flat for me. There was certainly chemistry but DJ was filled with doubt that he wouldn’t be prepared to put up with the chaos that follows her, even though he’s a supernatural. I’m certainly not against the pairing but found myself drawn to the idea of her and a certain charming pirate (that’s right Jean Lafitte, I’m looking at you again). He was absent for much of the first half but back in all his flirty glory during the second.

Elysian Fields is another great addition to this series. The ever-expanding world consistently hooks me, the plot was my favorite to date and I just can’t get enough of that pirate!
