In Kindling the Moon Jenn Bennett created a standout urban fantasy heroine in Arcadia Bell. The sequels have only cemented Bennett as a must read on my instant buy list. From page one of Binding the Shadows, there was no easy reintroduction into the Cady’s world, instead we join Cady and Lon on a cliff edge with an Earthbound demon throwing fireballs at them.

In Arcadia’s newest outing not only is her Tiki Lounge the latest in a string of robberies by chemically hyped Earthbound demons, she also has to prepare for the visit of Lon’s extremely old-fashioned in-laws and a parental figure who may not as dead as they thought. It’s quickly obvious that she is more terrified of Jupe’s grandmother than anything else she faces. Add to that the unexpected visit from Jupe’s estranged mother.

I picked up this series based on the VBC recommendation and I have to say that I wasn’t disappointed. For a relatively new author I am highly impressed with her world creation, character development and pacing. The book moves along at a quick pace with out once letting go of my interest. She fills out each of the characters with so much depth and detail that they almost jump off the page.

Jupe was tall for his age, only a few inches shorter than his dad, and though he was skinny as hell—all legs and arms and slender fingers—a masculine build was blooming beneath his lankiness.”

I couldn’t help but fall in love with all of Bennett’s characters and I totally enjoyed the rollercoaster ride she put me through with Binding the Shadows. I anxiously await the next installment in Cady’s adventure and would love to see some YA adventures with Jupe as the protagonist, as he steals the scene whenever he makes an appearance on the page.

I love Jenn Bennett’s Arcadia Bell series – all of the characters feel real – the family interactions are so nice, even though there are lots of issues in both families that they have to deal with
