Note: While this review will be spoiler free, it does reference events from previous books in the series.

Here‘s the thing about Shelly Laurenston’s books: No matter what mood you are in when you are start reading, by the time you put the book down you will have a silly grin etched across your face. It will get to the point that just by seeing Laurenston’s name on the cover will have you stupidly smiling at random strangers.

Bite Me, the latest in the Pride series, has us revisiting all our favorites, but much of the action takes place between newer characters in the series. Livy Kowalski is a honey badger from a family of shysters, thieves and con men. Vic Barinov is a hybrid tiger/bear from an aristocratic family whose hobby is to subvert criminal activity in the world. Although they may come from two very different backgrounds they form an unlikely friendship over their mutual love of artisanal honeys. It also helps that while Livy has all the skill of her nontraditional upbringing she prefers to focus on her photography rather than contributing to her family’s criminal empire.

I loved the development of Livy and Vic’s relationship. They are both quite quirky and generally tend to be loners (at least as much as their friends and family will let them). For some reason, which neither of them quite understands, they seem to fit together.

Through most of the book Vic and Livy are hunting the man responsible for her father’s death, but they do find time to go to a renaissance faire and a particularly vicious roller derby bout. Bite Me is excellently paced to keep the reader glued to the page as they try to find out what crazy thing is going to happen next. With Laurenston you never know. For example, the first time Livy tries to “seduce” Vic he literally freaks out and runs into a door trying to get away.

I have to admit I love anything Laurenston writes. A couple of times I have opened a book wishing it were about different character instead of new ones, but by the time I have finished I have fallen in love with the new characters. With each of her subsequent books I have a new favorite. If you haven’t started this series yet you are crazy to not move this to the top of your to-be-read pile.

Krista! I could not agree more! I got a silly smile on my face, reading your review and thinking about the awesomeness of Livy. My absolute favorite of Laurenston’s books is Beast Behaving Badly, because no matter what is wrong in my life, Blayne makes me laugh. I cannot wait to read Bite Me!
