Note: While this review will be spoiler free, it does make reference to previous books in the series. If you haven’t started yet, check out VBC’s review of Skinwalker.

Jane Yellowrock is still in New Orleans recuperating from the huge, epic mess at the end of Skinwalker. Leo is grieving, blames Jane, and, unsurprisingly, wants her dead. Jane now has questions about being a skinwalker, and there is a Cherokee shaman that could be a potential source of information, if Jane ever opened up. On top of all the personal issues, the vampire council has asked her to hunt down the rouge vampire that’s letting their crazy vampire children run around New Orleans and kill people.

We learn a lot about Jane’s past and what it means to be a skinwalker in this novel. We also learn a lot about the secrets and the politics of the vampire community, and how quickly loyalties are broken. Jane never knows whom she can trust, in a fight or with her heart. There’s a lot of steamy tension between Jane, Bruiser, and Rick. All the action and intrigue culminates into another big battle scene at the end, which is very kickass and awesome.

I love Jane and her Beast; they are both so sassy and tough. I even think the dialog between them is some of the most interesting parts of the story. Jane eventually reaches out to the Cherokee shaman and the beautiful, spiritual journey gives us a lot of interesting answers to some of the big questions. Like, why has no one else met a skinwalker? And where did Jane come from when she was found as a twelve-year-old walking out of the woods? What/who is Beast?

I really like Molly and her children, but if Molly doesn’t stand up for Jane to her husband she’s going to lose her friend for a silly reason. It’s going to be really interesting to see what happens to these witch children in the future. I sense an interesting future for Angie.

Jane also makes a terrible decision about lovers, but I’m not thrilled with the choices anyway. Neither of the men seem really interested in her, one just looks at her as a challenge and the other would be interesting if he wasn’t devoted to the vampires. I get the feeling this new tryst is not going to last. Hopefully we’ll see some new options in the future books. I don’t like Rick at all because he doesn’t seem to be interested in her, I think she just said “no” and that made her interesting. I would like Bruiser if he would put her first instead of his loyalties to the vampires. There are some seriously steamy scenes between these two. Which shows some serious potential, but Jane deserves someone as loyal to her as she will be to them.

What I really like about this series is Jane. She is tough, snarky, and extremely loyal, which is something that nearly every character around her lacks. I love the way that she’s bringing all the characters together to build a strong team to fight evil. The police, ex-marines, witches, vampires, shifters, Cherokee, and others are all banding together to help make the action and intrigue just that much more interesting.

Thanks for this. I read the first book some months ago and started the second but didn’t really get past the first chapter or two. Maybe now I’ll give it another shot

I absolutely love this review! I think it’s SPOT ON!

  4. I love Jane. LOVE her. This is one of my favorite UF series, and I agree that the Jane/Beast conversations are some of the most interesting parts of the series. And yeah, Molly totally needs to stand up to Evan about Jane.

I absolutely adore this series and think it’s one of the best in urban fantasy. The relationship between Jane and Beast is totally unique and keeps me buying this series the minute each new book comes out. Jane is also a character that has true character growth throughout the series.
