Humans, Sentinels, and necromancers, oh my. This is the set-up for the world of the Sentinels.
The most successful paranormal romance authors know how to create an alpha that has presence, swagger and commands a situation. Enter Duncan O’Connor, human (not really, he does his very best to his capabilities) and cop. The divorcee with a close-knit family and leery of relationships finds it very difficult to resist necromancer Callie Brown.
Callie, resident of Valhalla who crosses over to assist in cases for the police department periodically, is without a family, but not without protectors. No, the beauty is under the protection of Fane, a Sentinel who is described as something reminiscent of bench-pressed lethality and an air of sexiness.
If you’ve read any of Alexandra Ivy’s earlier work, you are familiar with the Guardians of Eternity. Duncan reminds me of her alphas from that series. But the standout here is Fane. Duncan carries the book well as a lead hero, but there is enough curiosity about Fane and the rest of the Sentinels that curiosity about when we’ll get the next book abounds.
Born in Blood is packed full of all the goodies. Family secrets, a cop with some serious supernatural mojo, a heroine who is badass on her own, but needs just a little rescuing. The sex is smoking hot. Speaking of smoking hot…
Fane. I’ve mentioned him before, I’ll do it again. Not just Fane, the entire group of Sentinels. The reader sees them more toward the end of the book, but their on-page presence will definitely pique curiosity.
Duncan reminded me of Butch O’Neal from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, a cop who knows there is just a little bit more in his DNA and who loves an understated beauty. Callie seems to be just as tortured about her affections as Marissa was, as well.
If you haven’t read Ivy’s books yet, Born in Blood is a great place to start. You’ll be looking forward to the next book as much as I am.

Happy New Year, Candace! Born in Blood was my first full-length Alexandra Ivy book and I liked it but not as much as you did. For starters I loathe the name Duncan so I had an issue with that right off. Luckily there was unique world building and Fane. *swoons* I can’t wait to get his story. I also had an issue with the cover since Callie is mentioned several times as having short hair so the model clearly isn’t the Callie in my head. Why is it that they never get that sorta thing right? Drives me
nutsnuttier.My issues aside, the series has potential and I will certainly be reading the next book in the series.
I’m so looking forward to reading this one.
