Sebastian is still on the loose and turning Shadowhunters into evil soulless creatures called Endarkened Ones. Jace is struggling with his identity still, especially after having been linked with Sebastian. This is a major theme throughout this book—good versus evil—and especially that gray area in between.

There are basically three parts to City of Heavenly Fire. The first is whiny, teenage angst. The second part is where all the real action is. The action in Cassandra Clares books is always top-notch and this book doesnt disappoint. There is an excellent lead up and ending battle that is truly awesome.

The ending of this book goes on for miles, it’s almost like the ending of the third Lord of the Rings movie, where you’ve been ugly sobbing for 30 minutes already, and just want it to end. Or maybe that’s just me? Either way, prepare yourself with tissues.

Jace is still trying to deal with the ramifications of the battle at Lake Lyn, which prevents Clary and him from touching. It’s frustrating for their teenage hormones. Now, I love me some tormented guys, but Jace is starting to really get on my nerves. For example, when Clary tells him about her almost getting raped by her brother, he turns it into an emo thing about how he can’t be trusted to protect her. Ridiculous. Where is Will Herondale? He was never this annoying. I rolled my eyes to0 many times that my eye sockets started hurting. In his defense, he does save the moment:

I just wish that I could say the right thing, do the right thing, to make this easier for you. Whatever you want from me, I want to do it. I want to be there for you in whatever the right way is for you, Clary.

Excellent save, my man.

We are introduced to some awesome secondary characters as well. Emma Carstairs is badass, and I hope her and Julian Blackthorn get their own book or series. Tessa and Brother Zachariah get a small cameo as well (read The Infernal Devices series for their story). The way that these two series intertwine is really beautifully done. Like when the London Institute was attacked, but was somehow able to fend itself off, that answer will be found in the TID series, which is such a cool little Easter egg for fans.

I thought this was one of the best books in the series. I loved how the author tied everything together and how she brought in new characters for future books. Very well written.

See, I wasn’t too keen on the idea of how much time was spent building up the characters for the new series. I liked them being in the story since there will be another series released with Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn, but I felt there was too much page time given to developing that story in this book. I much preferred the way Clare wrote in the Infernal Devices characters. Very subtle, yet still paying homage to that prequel series. They didn’t detract from the main Mortal Instruments series.

I also agree about the ending going on for miles!

Jill gets so close and personal with the characters! I thought I was the only one bring bludgeoned by raging teen hormones in this. Any suggestions what I should grab next at the book store Jill? I’m sure what you pick is a hit!

Do I ever!!! The Kate Daniels series is literally my favorite series of all time. and then in no particular order: The Hollows by Kim Harrison, The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, Tiger’s Saga by Colleen Houck, Fallen Angles by JR. Ward, Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neil, omg so many I should make a list for real =p

Add me on Goodreads! At the top of the page, go to the About link, then find my Bio and it will hopefully link you there!
