Note: This review will be spoiler free, but does assume you’ve read the other Arcana Chronicle books. If you haven’t, you should! Check out our review of Poison Princess.

I love the Arcana Chronicles, it’s truly one of my favorite YA series of all time. So, when Day Zero came out, I hopped on the Amazon and ordered that bad boy ASAP. I might even have stopped reading another book to start it.

Day Zero isn’t your typical Arcana Chronicles book. It is not the continuation of the story, it’s a prequel to…wait for it… day zero. A guidebook of the major Arcana. Who they were, what they were doing, and what happened to them when the big event happened. It brings us deeper into the world of the characters we have come to love and hate from the books.

It feels like forever, at least to this fan girl, since we have had a new Arcana Chronicles book, and this book was a clever way for Kresley Cole to reintroduce us into her world of players. Remind us how much we have missed Evie and Jack and The Fool and Death. I loved reading the backstories of the major players. I feel like I know them better than I did before, that I understand who and what they are. Why they made the choices they made in the first three books.

Day Zero made me care about the some of the other characters that the first three books only touched on. I got to meet them, cry with them, feel heartbroken with them. See what happened to them on the day that changed the world. I never thought I really needed to know those things, but it turns out that I loved hearing their stories. This book gave them a voice that needed to be heard.

Not everyone is going to love Day Zero, especially if you are expecting the story to move forward, but die-hard fans of the series, well, this book will give them a serious case of the happys. You’ll close the cover and immediately wonder when the next one, Arcana Rising, is coming out (FYI, it’s next Tuesday, August 15—pre-order it). I know I did, and I have that puppy on pre-order anxiously awaiting the day it pops up on my Kindle.

All I have to say is well played Kresley Cole. Well played.
