If all of the paranormal romance writers were assembled in a huge auditorium, Lara Adrian could carry Edge of Dawn to the front of the room, place it on a stand and announce she had set the bar for 2013 and it was up to them to meet it.
This is not a book about Mira and Kellan. This story focuses on an incredibly enthralling ensemble cast who merely put Mira and Kellan in the front of the group so they can have their page time. The story is set 20 years after the events of Darker After Midnight, and the world has been through a pretty significant adjustment now that the Breed is out in the open.
There is a curfew on feeding times and groups set up to make sure that the vamps and humans play nice. This is where Lucan Thorne finds himself. He’s basically the face of the Breed and has to make nice with the suits. Does our guy like this situation Not in the least. Profanity ensues.
Mira has grown up and, indeed, the girl has taken after her adopted mama, Renata. Mira leads her own group in the Order and can sling blades with the best of them. Serving with her is Nathan, who is Corinne’s son. He is also one of Mira’s best friends and keeps her grounded. The little girl who used to be called Mouse has grown into a woman with a lot of responsibility and even more heartbreak.
Kellan…suffice it to say, young Archer has a lot to make up for and not just to Mira. And I can’t elaborate on Kellan, because describing anything about the Warrior is a spoiler.
Adrian beautifully and flawlessly keeps us informed on her prior characters. You find out where most are and what they are currently doing because our beloved Order is scattered. She also has, in classic Adrian fashion, set things up beautifully for future books. You see the Midnight Breed children in action as up-and-coming members of the Order. One scares me though, and I’m not going to come right out and say which one, but let’s just say she is a rare female child of a Warrior and we have not met her yet. We also get a very touching scene between Tess and Rafe, the son she had with Dante in the last book.
Oh yeah! Have you given any thought to how Nikolai, tactical weapons specialist extraordinaire, is going to react to his little girl growing up and falling in love? *insert maniacal cackle here*

Great review! I liked the book but to me it felt a little slow as it was similar to a first book in a series which it basically is. The ‘new’ world building however is fantastic and I loved the twist in the end which promises so much for future books.
It’s ironic that you say that because I felt there were a lot of similarities between EoD and Lucan and Gabrielle’s book. It was sort of building the world of the Order, only a couple of decades later. The fact that Lara is able to do that twice in one series successfully speaks volumes for her writing abilities.
That’s true although I already like this world better and of course I’m so looking forward to Darion’s book but I guess either Nathan or Rune will be up next.
I went to Lara’s site to check and see if there was any detail on who the next book would be about and there was nothing. Could a book on Lazaro be in the works? He was mentioned a few times and he is Kellan’s grandfather. My money goes on Nathan being next, but anything is possible.
