First Grave on the Right was one of those books that made me irritated with anyone who dared interrupt me whilst reading it. Darynda Jones’ writing style flows so naturally that no page felt like a chore to read. I couldn’t put it down anywhere other than the end of a chapter and even then it was almost impossible.

Charley Davidson is the Grim Reaper. With one foot in this plane and the other in the otherside, she acts as ‘the light’ for all spirits that haven’t crossed over yet. Having grown up with her father and uncle on the police force, she’s been helping solve cases since she was a child. When three lawyers, all killed on the same night, show up on her doorstep Charley agrees to help them solve who is behind the murders.

I couldn’t help but like Charley, determined to always have the last word, some of her one-liners had me in stitches. Having grown up knowing exactly what she is, she takes everything in her stride, even if she does tend to barrel into situations headfirst. She may come across as happy and well adjusted, but as the plot unfolds we see that she has learned the hard way when it comes to other people finding out her secret identity, most notably with her stepmother. Even the select few in her life who have always supported her don’t know the whole truth.

Charley may have been doing this all her life but things start to happen that make her realizes she may have a thing or two left to learn about this reaper gig. For the past month she has been plagued with super-charged erotic dreams and now the terrifying entity that has stalked her all her life has started showing up again. I’m not going to go to in depth about the plot, as I truly had no idea where this book was going and loved every minute of the action and mystery.

And then there’s Reyes… Enigmatic doesn’t even begin to describe the boy Charley had a chance encounter with when she was a teenager (I’d possibly add illegally hot to that description too). Having made such a strong impression that even to this day she can’t stop thinking of him, these two have a magnetic connection. Charley’s determination to find out everything she can about him is a major driving force in the book and I was right there with her. Hold on to your hats VBC readers, cause Darynda Jones knows how to write a hot scene (or five).

First Grave on the Right is a hilarious read on the surface with a darker thread running underneath. Action and tons of mystery combined with a likeable heroine and infectious writing style make this a series I will one hundred percent be continuing with (Reyes might have something to do with that too).

Sexual content: Relatively explicit sex scenes
