I have to admit that I was taken by surprise by Robin D. Owens Ghost Seer. The only other books I have read by Owens are from her Celta Series. So I have to say I was expecting a paranormal futuristic romance. Instead I found something much more unique and different than anything that I have read lately.

Clare Cermak is a straight-laced buttoned-down accountant who has just inherited a fortune from her eccentric aunt. But money is the least of her aunt’s bequests. Clare’s aunt had been an infamous psychic, with the ability to speak to ghosts. Unfortunately for Clare she seems to have inherited said ability. Through a large chunk of the book Clare struggles with accepting whether ghosts are real and questioning her own sanity.

Ghost Seer doesn’t lack for a love interest either. Like Clare, Zach Slade has found himself in a new place in life. Wounded in the line of duty as a deputy sheriff, he is now trying to figure out what he wants to do with his days. I loved the relationship between these two characters. They are both at a point in their lives where they are broken and are finding themselves walking down paths that they never thought they would. The push and pull between them kept me glued to the page. Also the secondary characters Owens creates are amazing. More than once they had me chuckling out loud at their antics. I am definitely excited to see what their future hijinks will be.

This book also reads more like a lighter urban fantasy than your typical paranormal romance, with the potential to go even darker. Although the setting is modern, the ghosts and location gives the novel a western feel. Being the first in the series Ghost Seer has a lot of foundation to set, but it doesn’t overshadow the mystery and adventure that are the heart of the book.

So if you are looking for something unique from everything else out there I definitely recommend checking out Owens’ new series. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

I would have liked to have read this book but unfortunately (1) this book is not released in the UK until 22nd May and (2)is not available as an ebook. Hopefully the author will rethink and release as an ebook.

I can’t speak to as when it will be released in the UK, but I will say this is offered as an ebook in the U.S. So I wouldn’t be surprised if other publishers did the same.

And a reminder that the author has no control over the formats/timing on the publication when they go through a traditional publisher like Berkley. Publishers determine the publication dates and formats, but I’m sure Robin has her fingers crossed for a UK release, too!
