Long-standing fans of Kerrelyn Sparks’ Love At Stake series have had a curiosity about Zoltan. He’s been present, but mysterious. And if there is anything paranormal romance fans love, it is a mysterious, broody hero.

Thus begins Zoltan’s book. He’s mysterious, with Howard present as security at his Transylvanian house, only under persuasion from Howard’s wife Elsa and Angus McKay. We see, from Zoltan’s perspective, an arrow on the wall. This very arrow, being the one that killed his father, has eluded Zoltan for centuries. Why can’t he find the source, therefore discovering who really killed his father.

Neona comes from a long line of empowered women, if empowered truly is the word that I’m looking for. These women are led to rule by force, mate only to be impregnated, keep the baby only if it is a girl, and, oh yes, kill the male after they have sex. I’m thinking these women are the love child of Wonder Woman’s people and a super race of black widow spiders. Not to mention, Neona has recently lost her sister, and her mother, the queen, is feminism on steroids.

Freud would have fun with this couple. Zoltan, and his centuries-old issues with his father’s death plus Neona with her overbearing mother and grief.

In any other circumstance, this book would not have worked.  But Kerrelyn Sparks writes snark like she is a virtuoso. Masterfully combining humor and sexy-as-hell paranormal alphas, she truly has a gift. She rewards her dedicated fans with giving up glimpses into previous H&H’s lives, and keeps us curious about what is to come. There is a demon who snatches people and disappears (Darafer – no swiping!) and curiosities about the new…*cough*…discoveries that have been uncovered in Beyul-La, Neona’s home. Oh, and one hell of a whopper among the vamps at the end of How to Seduce a Vampire (Without Really Trying), which will leave series fans curious.

Zoltan is just as smolderingly-heroic as I thought he would be. Neona is his match, and I was very satisfied with their page time. I am very glad that I read the latest addition in the Love at Stake series and definitely anticipate the next installment.

So many books, so little time has made me not follow this series for a long time but I may start back up again with this as it sounds like a good one, plus, I really like this cover.
