Mackenzie Stone, award-winning journalist for the Dallas Daily Star, knows there’s something up with the ultra-secretive Dallas SWAT team. Trouble is she’ll be hard pressed to convince anyone that the darlings of Dallas are anything but the stand-up members of the police force that they portray themselves to be every time they put their lives on the line to save someone. Each time she’s turned down for an interview her suspicions are further compounded. Once the opportunity arises for her to get an inside look into the workings of SWAT, Mackenzie is immediately intrigued by the leader of the group Gage Dixon.

The most important thing for Gage is the protection of his Pack and their secrets. That’s why when journalist Mackenzie Stone won’t back down, Gage figures giving her a little peek at the SWAT team will throw her off the scent trail, in a manner of speaking. But from the moment he lays eyes on her, his protective instincts and attraction to her are in overdrive. Enough that it causes the rest of the Pack to bring up the long thought myth of The One. Despite their attraction, Mackenzie’s ruthless journalistic view and Gage’s vow to keep the Pack’s secret could mean any burgeoning relationship may be doomed before it really starts.

So, it’s no surprise that Hungry Like the Wolf is about a werewolf pack SWAT team. It says so in the book blurb and essentially the title gives a little away too. Considering this, I was caught off guard by the lack of werewolf scenes in the actual story. Looking back, I find the subtle way Paige Tyler delivers her werewolf lore to readers—whether it’s a quick, fleeting thought by Gage or showing a Pack member injured in one scene and then right away in the next healed—to be pretty clever. Again, looking back, it really made me focus on all the aspects of the story for the little tidbits that I could piece together on my own to form my own knowledge base of werewolves in this world. However, while I was reading, I felt very distracted at the nearly non-existent werewolf scenes.

If the goal of this was trying to maintain a modicum of secrecy then it already fails, seeing as how a big part of the selling point of the book itself is based upon the fact that they are a SWAT team made up of werewolves. It defeats the purpose to shroud one of the big characteristics of the book since readers already know. I would have much rather taken the unknowing journey with Mac and had a big surprise towards the end than simply waiting for Mac to catch up with what readers already know.

Overall, for me, Hungry Like the Wolf was pretty middle-of-the-road reading. Nothing popped up that was too game changing or unique. Yes, the romance between Gage and Mac does have some very hot scenes, but it wasn’t enough to carry the book. I am interested to see how Tyler plans to continue on with the series so there’s a possibility I would pick up the next book.

  1. I’ve yet to try a Paige Tyler book, but I’ve seen two different series from her that I want to try. I don’t know which one I should try first. Plus, I’m already so far behind on my TBR pile. Great review.
