When Thad Morgan was born, an oracle predicted that his powers would not develop until he met his fated mate. The mark on his arm would lead him to the woman who would help him rule the vampire people. Thad has just become king after his father’s death, but fears that his powerless state will make him and his people vulnerable to the wizards who hunt them. So he and his friend Lee set out to find his mate before he announces his ascension to the throne. But the woman they discover in a Florida nightclub is nothing like they expected.

Isobel Anthony’s parents were outsiders in vampire society. When they died in an accident she continued to live as an outcast, feeding from humans in clubs. Their blood is not as strong, but she never expected to develop vampire powers anyway. When a man approaches her claiming to be the king of the vampires and offering her a chance to be his queen, Isobel doesn’t think she’s qualified for the job. But she feels an undeniable connection to Thad. And when she finally encounters the wizards, she starts to think that staying on her own may not be the best idea.

King of Darkness was predictable paranormal romance, but I enjoyed it. The supporting characters, especially the cocky vampire general Siddoh, were a lot of fun. I like the variety of powers the vampires develop, like teleportation and invisibility, and the fact that everyone’s power is different. I’m also curious about the wizards and their history. We know they kill vampires and steal their powers, but their ultimate goal is unclear. And I wonder if any other creatures live in this world. There are hints that they might. I think the addition of witches or weres would be interesting.

I read King of Darkness right after Kate Baxter’s The Last True Vampire so the similar elements in the two really stand out for me, like the king looking for the fated mate who will increase his powers, and the opposing group of supernaturals hunting vampires. But Staab’s vampires are more modern and informal, and the overall tone of her book is lighter. Still, I think fans of Baxter’s series might want to give this one a try. I’ll probably check out the next book in the series to see what happens.

The next book features a hero who’s a virgin, so I was all over that one. Also, the heroine is very strong and kickass and the hero loved that in her. I enjoyed both books.
