Charon is so badass and awesome. He is an immortal warrior who is a part of a group of men and women who fight evil druid witches. Charon keeps himself apart from the group, because of his immense guilt over wrongs he committed eons ago. He tries to make amends by pouring money into his hometown, and helping the people find jobs, but he does it quietly and humbly. One such lost soul is his assistant, Laura Black.

Laura has always been attracted to Charon, but he has never shown even the slightest hint of noticing her, so she keeps her interest a secret. Then one day the bad guys catch up with Charon and attack his office. Unfortunately Laura is there instead, and gets thrown headfirst into the world of the warriors and druids in a never-ending battle of good versus evil.

Charon has been the dark, mysterious warrior in the Dark Warriors series, so I’m so happy that he finally gets his own story with Midnight’s Captive. The fact that the love story is the boss and a worker gives it a ‘forbidden love’ feel, which is really sexy. I really liked Laura as well; she was not a weakling waiting for her man to save her. She was quick thinking, independent, and a good match for Charon. She does make the occasional horror-movie-chick error, like when she’s hiding out from the bad guys but decides that she wants to go visit and have it out with her mom.

As I said before in my review of the first book in the series Midnight’s Master, I really enjoy the Celtic magic portion of this world. Even though other authors have done the druid magic thing before, this world feels really original and fresh. The bad guys ooze the evil and you don’t have to wait forever for the bad guys to get their due.

I would recommend spacing these books out a bit, because while they are awesome stories, if you read them back-to-back it would get repetitive really quickly. They’re the type of books that follow the same pattern, so it can get a little predictable. I love this series though, and will keep coming back to them for more!
