Note: While this review will be spoiler free, it will refer to events in previous books. If you haven’t started this series yet, check out our review of the first book Blade Song.

Having spent her life running from a past that won’t leave her alone, Kit has fought hard to find her place in a dangerous world. She isn’t really a people person, has a smart mouth and a tendency to act with her sword first, ask question later. Through her relationship with Damon though she finally starts to open up and begins to trust him with the horrors of her past. It’s been a long time since Kit was accountable to another person, and while Damon’s alpha nature grates at times, I could see lightness beginning to shine through her tough exterior.

But life is never simple for Kit Colbana. If it’s not a crazy cat-shifter hiring you on pain of death, then it’s ex-boyfriends turning up with the news of a hit squad after your current beau. Members of the Assembly, the supernatural council, are being murdered and the human government has one prime suspect: Damon. To make matters worse, said ex-lover not only hires her to investigate the murders, he also slaps her with a binding spell, meaning she has no way of warning Damon.

Night Blade is an action-packed read as Kit races against the clock to solve who is behind the murders and why. I really enjoyed coming back to the supernatural world J.C Daniels has created. There’s a dark energy to these supernaturals that seems to pulse off the page. Violence is never far away and Kit is more than ready to take up her blade. We get to delve deeper into the cat clan and its dynamics as Kit tries to navigate not only her relationship with Damon but also relationships with the whole pack. We also see a more aggressive side to the witches as they flex their power filled muscles. I loved getting a better understanding of the Assembly as well as the power players in this gritty urban fantasy world.

Kit grows a lot in this book, striving to be more open and connect with other people. Although she does have relationships with others, she has always refused to be weak in front of them. Here we see her finally leaning on someone, which made it all more heartbreaking to watch as her hard work was unraveled by the binding spell. Kit is a fighter though and she isn’t prepared to lose the peace she has carved out for herself, going to extreme lengths to protect the ones she loves. I wish we had learned more about her Aneira abilities, but I have a feeling these will be a huge part of the next book.

If Night Blade had ended three-quarters of the way through I still would have thought this was a great follow up to Blade Song with plenty of mystery, exciting mythology and character growth. But it didn’t… And wow, the last quarter of this book brings a whole new meaning to brutal. It was heartbreaking, shocking, at times difficult to read and utterly engrossing. I literally couldn’t put this book down past a certain point as I watched characters and relationships altered forever. Kit’s journey after this book will be harder than ever and I will absolutely be back to take it with her.

I haven’t read this series yet, but I’ve been seeing a lot of people comment about it. Not that I need to add any more books to my TBR list *blush* but I think I might have to add this one and Blade Song. Great review 😉
