Vampire stories have been around as long as the sharpened wooden stake. What sets them apart is the details.

The Sweetblood series is an underrated stand out and I would love to see that change. Laurie London has created a world of vampires that respects old traditions and throws in a few twists. Sweetblood is a reference to the blood of humans that is more appealing than blood of regular humans. Kind of like me and my morning pot of coffee—God help you if you block me from that. And if you really want to intensify the effect of blood on the vampires, put the human in sunshine before the vampire feeds. Kind of like when Starbucks puts a bonus shot of espresso in your frap. Ahhhh…

I have wanted Santiago’s story since the beginning of the Sweetblood series. Finally, with Seduced by Blood, I got my wish. I discovered that Santiago was actually Tristan Santiago. Fans of the Sweetblood series know that you can’t put a meek human with Santiago and expect fireworks to happen. Oh no. The ever stubborn vampire needs someone equally as stubborn who will defy him at every turn, challenge him when his arrogance becomes too much and ground him when he needs it.

Roxy is this woman. A tracker trainer, who is a former Guardian, Roxy has to help Santiago find the double agent responsible for the near death of one of the beloved heroes from earlier in the series. So how does a vampire who has spent decade after decade pushing people away partner successfully with a tracker who has issues of her own?

Like a boss, that’s how.

The chemistry between Roxy and Santiago smolders. The sex is sizzling in Seduced by Blood. The anticipation raises gooseflesh and the looks they give each other melts the page. The unloveable and the survivor connect and make you realize that London is a damned good author. Not only that, but she has created a bad guy who makes you want to go wail on a punching bag. Ventra is despicable and there is a scene at the end of the book where I want to high five my girl Roxy.

If you want to see a primary example of London’s writing prowess, consult chapter 23. Dom, Alfonso and Jackson are all in Santiago’s office giving him hell (if you want to know the exact reason, read the book) and you see all four Sweetblood heroes acting like a group of human men. Jackson, Dom and Alfonso read their boy the riot act, tell him what needs to be done and do their duty as Santiago’s best friends. You also see developing repercussions from the evil acts of Ventra in the Guardian ranks. I’m crossing my fingers that Mitch’s story is being planned.

This, being PNR, has a HEA. But to get there, Roxy and Santiago have challenges, including the vampire that Roxy used to love. But with friends like Dominic, Alfonso, Jackson and their mates, Roxy and Santiago will have all the help they can get.

If you haven’t started Sweetblood, give it a chance. And you’re welcome.

  1. LuLu says:

This series sounds like a worthy read but I think I would have bought it for the cover “art” alone. Does anybody else do this, buy a book because of the hottie on the cover?

  2. I love this series!

And yes LuLu, I bye things because of their covers.

  3. Candace says:

Yay Megan – me too! And LuLu, yes. The very first PNR I bought was The Undead Next Door by Kerrelyn Sparks and I bought it for the cover.
