To say that Deacon and Cici have a past is a bit of an understatement. They’ve been hovering in and out of each other’s lives for nearly 240 years, always fighting the obvious attraction between them. Well, the time has come when Cici desperately needs Deacon’s help.

Cici is the owner of the successful business Your Other Half, which caters to finding relationships between humans and ‘others’ (vampires, weres, fae, etc.). Of course a business like this will have its share of opposition, and when clients start turning up dead and Cici’s own life is threatened she can think of no one else to turn to except Deacon. His help will come with a price, however: Cici in his bed.

While on the search for the killer, information from both Cici and Deacon’s pasts come to light. Information Deacon would have loved to stay hidden. Will their attraction to one another be enough to save their relationship?

I really enjoyed Sex and the Single Vamp. Probably one of the only things I can find to complain about is I wish it was longer! The dynamic between Deacon and Cici, at first standoffish and later sizzling, is great. I could have easily read 100 more pages of these two together butting heads.

Cici is very headstrong, she won’t back down from a fight, and even when her life is threatened she doesn’t run away scared, she’s ready to meet the challenge head on. Cici also unequivocally believes in love, the forever kind. She’s strong in her convictions that everyone, even Others, deserve to find lasting love. Despite her life being in danger because of her beliefs, she can’t be swayed.

Deacon, on the other hand is the typical alpha male. He’s physically strong and in charge, but he doesn’t let himself get close to anyone emotionally. He thinks the idea of Others and humans finding happiness together is a thing of fairy tales and can’t actually work out. He’d never admit his true feelings to Cici, but when she comes to him for help, he sees it as an opportunity to put their attraction to rest for good. What ends up happening is Deacon has to actually confront his feelings and figure out why he’s been keeping them closed off for so long.

Robin Covington manages to throw in some interesting twists during the investigation into the murders. While the murders are the driving force behind finally getting Cici and Deacon together, they definitely take a backseat to the building relationship. By the end, there’s enough left open that I’m hoping Covington chooses to revisit Cici and Deacon again. The world building was such that I would be happy learning more about some of the secondary characters as well.

Note to Robin Covington: Please write some prequel shorts featuring Cici and Deacon during their times working as spies for the government!
