Rating (out of 5): 4.5 stars

Eve Silver has officially made my auto-buy list. As I said in my review of the second Otherkin book Sins of the Soul, her prose is stunning. The same is true in Sins of the Flesh, the final book in the trilogy.

Through the three novels, we have met three soul reaper brothers — demigods — who have sought the remains of their brother in the hopes of resurrecting him. Malthus, the brother focused on in Sins of the Flesh, is also keen to make those who murdered Lokan pay. With all the underworld politics, it’s hard to point a finger. Add into the mix each of the soul reaper sons falling head-over-heels for a Daughter of Aset, sworn enemies, and you have a complex paranormal mystery with excellent love stories. (Can you see why Silver’s books are must-buys yet?)

Sins of the Flesh is my favorite of the trilogy. (Notable as I tend to like the second books in trilogies where everything gets really bad.) There are three main reasons it’s a notch above the others.

First, Silver had my feelings about Mal do a 180. In earlier books we see him superficially, and I thought he was an ass. Maybe I like assholes, because his interactions with the awesome Calliope and reading from his point-of-view have me loving the adrenaline junkie.

Calliope may be a big reason for loving Mal. She’s the second reason Flesh is top of the Otherkin books. She’s in far deeper with the Daughters of Aset than the women we met in previous books. She challenges Mal in every way — early on it’s mostly physical challenges, then later big emotional ones. He does the same to her. Calliope is strong and self-reliant, but also very controlled. Watching her let her guard down is liberating to the reader, too.

Finally, Silver lets us read from the points-of-view of characters we care about from the earlier books. Sins of the Flesh is the full picture and offers a fitting and complete close to the Otherkin trilogy.
