Soulbound is a primary example of the appeal of a cover. The red on Xandra’s dress pulled me in and, boy, am I glad that it did.

Having read the Dragon’s Heat series from Tessa Adams (and this is me putting in a request for more of the sexy shifters), I was already familiar with Adams’ ability to write characters that pull the reader in.  Here not only did she do that, but also created an alpha that is one of the most formidable that I have read about lately.

Declan Chumomisto is a Warlock. I’m talking about him first, even though the book centers around Xandra, because Declan is just the kind of badass that commands you to address him first.  Warlock by bloodline, illusionist by trade, the heat that Declan puts on the page will make it impossible to put Soulbound down.

A princess, the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter born to the Morgan family, Xandra’s power doesn’t appear by her witchly coming-of-age party. Horrified by her lack of powers, Xandra leaves her party and runs into Declan in the woods After one brief contact with the warlock, Xandra doesn’t see him for another eight years. She tries to lead a normal life. Well, okay, as normal as a life can be when your mother is doing everything short of channeling a pair of ruby slippers and a yellow brick road to bring about Xandra’s powers. Declan comes back into her life in a major way. Not only does Xandra hear his voice in her head as her new powers appear, her roommate also drags her on a double date to a hot new show that everyone is raving about – a performance of Declan Chumomisto, Illusionist. Declan puts on a display that would make David Copperfield weep with envy which gives Xandra a taste of his power.

The rest of the book is a wild ride full of flips, turns, crazy mamas, overprotective brothers and psychotic murderers. The storyline is close enough to urban fantasy that it counts, yet the romance is such a strong part of the story. Fans of both genres should check this out.

The one thing detracting from the story is the family element. Xandra’s brother Donovan and a few of her sisters are very supportive of their sister and I would love to read more about them. But the mother is the kind of meddling that makes you run far and long away from your family.  Maybe Mom will be more endearing in future books, but here she just irritated me. The woman, as of this book, has used chemicals in two of her children to try and enhance their witchcraft. Frankly, I’m not impressed.

The a-ha moments in Soulbound are intense. I absolutely love when the author puts fault in a character. Declan, for all of his smoldering sex appeal, has a lot of them. He has done things that Xandra, by all rights, may not be able to forgive him for. Fortunately, by that time, you’ve already fallen head-over-literary-heels for him and the reader can only hope that Xandra is able to overlook as much as we can.

At the end of the book, I wanted more. I closed Soulbound knowing that the story was not done. Hopefully, Adams will give us more of her Texas witches and warlocks soon.

I really enjoyed this book and was frustrated to discover that I must wait to read the next book in this series. Liked the characters and I’m looking forward to the next book!

Marcia, this is the downfall of discovering a series as it just comes out…waiting for the next book. And you definitely do want the next book in this series.

  2. After seeing this one on Goodreads I added to my wish list and after reading your review I have my fingers crossed that I can get to it sometime soon.

Jennifer, two words…Declan Chumomisto. He is the reason you should get to this one as soon as you can get your hands on it. Declan is badass enough that if Adams has a strong enough following, I can definitely see him in the Alpha Showdown.

  4. Can’t wait to read this one. It’s already sitting on my shelf. Declan sounds hot…
