Note: While this review is spoiler-free, it does assume you have read the first in the series.

After reading Chelsea’s review of Dragon Bound, I decided it was high time I bumped it up to the top of my TBR pile (it’s also this month’s VBC group read) and was exceedingly glad I did. Having really enjoyed the introduction to Thea Harrison’s world, I dived straight into the second in the series Storm’s Heart and can now be chalked up as a major fan of these books.

The second novel features Tricks, first seen as head of PR at Cuelebre Enterprises and much needed feminine relief for Pia. After Drago takes out Uriel, the Dark Fae King, Tricks must now take her rightful place as queen. Having run for her life after the slaughter of her family more than two centuries ago and sought sanctuary with the Wyr, she is less than thrilled about the idea of leaving her life and friends to rule the Distant Fae kingdom. Determined to start as she means to go on, she refuses a Wyr escort and travels to Chicago to meet the Dark Fae delegation.

When Tiago, powerful Thunderbird and sentinel, sees the YouTube footage of an assassination attempt on Tricks and learns she hasn’t been heard from since, no one is more surprised than him at his violent reaction. Dropping everything, he races to Chicago, finding her injured (and stinking drunk) in a motel. Volunteering to be her bodyguard, Tiago isn’t going anywhere, no matter how much Tricks protests. What follows is thrilling read full of supernatural politics, inter species conspiracies and one of my favorite ever paranormal romance pairings (that’s right, I went there.)

Just about everything is staked against these two, beginning with the fact they’ve hardly spoken, and only then it was to shout at each other. So, naturally, I loved seeing them get stuck in a room together and watching the sparks fly. It takes awhile for the uber alpha male to understand his feelings for Tricks, but once he does, he gives new meaning to tenacious. Tricks has a harder time, she isn’t just struggling with romantic feelings that have come out of nowhere, but also the political implications of a romance. I loved the mixture of steamy romance and genuine partnership between them.

Not only is this a knockout romance, is also has tons of action. I loved the diplomatic side with the undercurrent of personal power plays and backstabbing. We also get to delve deeper into the world building, getting better acquainted with the Dark Fae race and also being introduced to the vampires. Some of the other sentinels we only briefly met in Dragon Bound get more page time here as well and I have to say I’m dying to see more of both Rune, the gryphon, and Aryal the harpy.

After finishing Storm’s Heart I’m now thoroughly kicking myself for not starting this brilliant series sooner. If you’re looking for a paranormal romance that has dense world building with an engaging plot to go alongside its all-consuming romance and memorable characters, then you should definitely give this series ago if you haven’t already.
