Nicole Peeler makes me laugh out loud.

Often.

Her heroine in Tempest Rising, Jane True, has great one-liners, sharp wit and, in general, is a girl you’d want to hang out with. Unless you’re from her small hometown in Maine, where everyone has decided she’s just not normal.

Everyone in Rockabill knows Jane’s strange mother ran off when Jane was 6. And they had always held it against her, but it was after her high school sweetheart died that the town really turned on her. As is the nature of cloistered communities, people made up their own stories about his death. It wasn’t the truth, but everyone was sure he’d died trying to save Jane from killing herself. This means, of course, she’s to blame and is bad/crazy/etc.

And for the most part Jane’s normal. She works in a book store, she loves to cook, she wears awesome green Chuck Taylors. The only odd part of her life is her love of swimming in the freezing ocean near the world’s fifth largest whirlpool. That is not normal. But when Jane finds a dead body during a late-night swim, she gets pulled into the supernatural world she didn’t know she belonged to. Discovering she’s half selkie (a seal shifter), she’s left to learn more about her kind and the new world she’s a part of while aiding in a murder investigation.

Ryu is the investigator sent to figure out why supernatural types are being killed in Rockabill. He’s also a vampire and very taken by the lovely Ms. True.

Jane’s so sure he couldn’t really want to date her. She’s so used to men cancelling dates once the town gossips have let her reputation leak that she just knows Ryu can’t really want to be with her. He knows it all and he is only more impressed by her because of it. As much as the two want to linger in the lovely-dovey state, the ante on the murders is escalating and this means Jane is about to get a crash course in all things supernatural. (FYI: The genie just wants to get in your pants.)

I could cite passage after memorable passage from this novel. Like Jane getting a high off swimming in a magically charged pool, equating it to crack. But what’s most important is Tempest Rising sets the stage for a great series and it tackles dark topics with direct action and punch. Also, I just really love Jane. She’s a fun character that’s strong not in your standard sword-wielding way, but in sense of self and in making important moves knowing she’ll accept the dangerous consequences.

Bonus: Ryu equals delicious vampire. He’ll take you for a picnic on the beach, protect you and, oh, fangs.

Sexual content: Non-graphic sex scenes

Great review! This series only gets better as it goes on and talk about hilarious. This book is so funny/witty it should considered a hazard to drink or eat anything while reading it. Peeler’s wit and random hilarity will have you snorting or choking at any number of passages – but that’s good!

Loved it from beginning to end, I want Jane to be my best friend and I’m crushing on Ryu hardcore.

So stoked for book four to come out this summer.
