Mix together a talking Jack Russell Terrier, a sexy griffon and a group of elderly biker witches and you’ll have just touched the surface of the ridiculousness of The Accidental Demon Slayer.

Elizabeth Brown is a pre-school teacher about to celebrate her 30th birthday, when her biological grandmother contacts her and wants to reconnect. When she finally sees her grandmother for the first time, she isn’t expecting the tattooed biker. She especially isn’t expecting to be locked in her bathroom while her crazy g-ma performs some kind of spell on her. But what really puts the cherry on her awful day is the really scary demon that materializes out of thin air behind her.

Her grandmother takes her (and her poor pup, Pirate, the newly-talking Jack Russell) on a whirlwind trip to escape the demons that are now after her. They meet up with the grandmother’s coven, which is a biker gang called the Red Skulls. Where they induct her into their coven and start trying to train her to become the demon slayer.

Every hundred years or so, a new demon slayer is born into the witch lines. It’s apparently fallen to Lizzie to be the new demon slayer and to help protect humanity. The demons have already reduced the witch population down to a handful, and she has to start training immediately if she wants to have a chance at surviving, or protecting anyone.

The biker grandmothers are a very intriguing lot. I’m not quite sure if I find their antics adorably hilarious or just disgusting. Which I honestly think this is how Lizzie feels in the beginning. There are several times when I would have just said, “Nope, I’m leaving now.” Lizzie just keeps forgiving and trucking along.

Dimitri, the griffon, is a very mysterious character. Even at the end of the book, I didn’t really know what his deal is. He walks into the story claiming to be her “protector,” but not a lot of explanation is giving to this. The tension between them seems very real however, and the romance very sweet. I think this will be developed more in the coming books.

The action is fantastic, and this is a really fast-paced read. Almost too fast. Like there’s no time for questions or answers or even a breath. You just have to accept things and keep reading. There are still a ton of holes even by the end of the book, which I hope means that they will be answered in the coming books in the series.

Overall, I really liked The Accidental Demon Slayer. Even the talking dog, which occasionally leans to the annoying, and the biker grandmas and their fascination with road kill, which got a bit much for me. I really loved the action, especially the climatic, action-packed ending.
