I was a big fan of C.L. Wilson’s Tairen Soul series, so The Winter King has been on my to-be-read list for quite some time. So why did it take me more than a year to pick this book up? I could make up an excuse, such as publication kept being pushed back or that I was distracted by shiny new books. But in all honesty it took VBC’s HBIC Chelsea giving me a nudge to finally pull this book out of my to-be-read pile. For which I am grateful, as I got to savor the fantasy romance yumminess that is The Winter King.

The Winter King is a style of fantasy romance that we currently do not see much of anymore. This is a book involving kings, queens, magic, mythical creatures and other legendary items. Even the cover seems like a throwback compared to the current style. Now before anyone jumps to the comments, I know those books are still there and they probably are some of my favorites. What I am trying to get across is they are currently being overshadowed by their paranormal, urban, new adult, and erotica peers.

At the beginning of the book the Summer Kingdom and the Winter Kingdom are at war because of the idiotic actions of the Summer Royalty. In brutal retaliation the Winter King waged a war of ruthless conquest. His final act in his vengeance is taking one of the fabled Summer Princess as his bride and exiling most of the Summer Nobility. Through various hijinks he ends up married to a princess no one knew existed.

Khamsin (princess) and Wynter’s (Winter King) relationship is incredibly rocky. She despises him for his actions toward her kingdom and her siblings. All he can see when he looks at her is the traitorous nature of her family. They also have to deal with the fact that in his search for vengeance he embraced a cold power, which is slowly killing his humanity. Despite this they can’t help but being drawn towards each other. Every moment they spent together they almost seem to spark against each other. Their embraces were intense and engaging.

This story was epic. It was not simple case of boy-meets-girl and they fall in love. No, it was journey of trials and troubles. Each time you think that they might finally have figured everything out, something comes along to wreck any progress they may have made. Luckily Khamsin is not a wilting damsel in distress who is willing to accept the fate laid out for her. The Winter King is a fantasy novel with a strong romance plot woven through it. We have heroic battles, legends coming to life, and prophecies unfolded.

I highly recommend this book, if you like your fantasy with a little romance or vice versa. It’s also a great palate cleanser after a book hangover or genre overload. Seriously pull this book out of your to-be-read pile and enjoy the deliciousness.

I think I liked this book better than her Tairen Soul series. Don’t get me wrong, I really loved that series, but it was one of those that, by the end, we have so many points of view between so many characters that it got overwhelming.

However, with Winter King (and I’m assuming how the rest of this series will go) we have one couple per book.

    Great Review!

I love this series! It’s been awesome so far. I love epic fantasy romances. So far the series has focused on just the one couple… and their story is OMG fabulous. I’m fixing to start book 4…

Sounds great. You are right I have stopped reading books like this in favour of other genres, this has reminded me of why I used to love this type of novel.
