Jennifer Ashley has created a unique addition to the paranormal romance genre. In the world she created shifters live on reservation-like compounds were their rights and freedoms are severally limited. They even wear magic-infused collars that cause intense pain whenever their adrenaline spikes.

The book opens with our heroine on the side of the road when her fiancé’s classic Corvette breaks down and she can’t get a signal on her cell phone. She looks up and sees a “tall hunk of a man” standing in the tall Texas grass amid white and yellow flowers. A beginning which easily could lend itself as the set up for a questionable movie. Instead the hero fixes the damsel’s car and escorts her home where she walks in on her fiancé cheating on her. In shock she accidentally deserts her Good Samaritan, who then gets shot by her now former fiancé.

This may not be the best foundation for a relationship to build off, but for Carly and Tiger it’s one of the smaller obstacles they face. The majority of Tiger’s life has been in captivity where he was subjected to experimentation and torture. Although now free, he is almost more alone than ever with the majority of shifters avoiding him in fear. Also the government who had once been his captor are still interested in reclaiming their investment.

The only issue I had with this book was Tiger. Not his general smokin’ animalistic hotness—that I quite happily enjoyed. It was his uncivilized animalistic nature that would sometimes annoy me. I understand that because of his upbringing, Tiger is more in touch with his animalistic side than his human nature. At times this came off as more childish than attractive but that didn’t really affect more overall enjoyment of the book.

I would definitely recommend picking up Tiger Magic (or any of the Shifters Unbound series), as it is a great addition to the genre.
