The one thing he could feel was the heartbeat of the world that thrummed like a solid hum under his feet. It vibrated through him as the constellations aligned and the gateways were weakened.

Evil was coming and it wasn’t going to take prisoners.

Let the war begin…

Acheron, Mencheres, Zarek, Zsadist and Lothaire no longer are alone at the monthly support group of tortured immortals. Ren Waya can easily join this group and perhaps horrify them with his tales of being kicked by life.

Sherrilyn Kenyon has, at this point, more than 20 books into the Dark-Hunter world. It takes a lot of work to keep interest that far into a series. She has done it. She takes two characters, each tied to others we already know, and weaves their destinies together. She makes you want happiness for Ren and Kateri and that, my dear Dark-Hunter lovers, is pretty hard to come by.

Ren’s got more issues than all of the magazine phone sale offices in the U.S. combined. His age places him at carbon-dating level. He was there when Apollymi unleashed a mother’s fury on the planet for the death of her son. The sad part about it is that the vengeance of a goddess isn’t the worst thing that Ren has been through in his life, both human and otherwise. It takes one hell of a woman to get this Dark-Hunter past his reservations.

Enter Kateri Avani, former scientist extraordinaire. She’s a scientist, a logical thinker and not one prone to give any heed to the stories her grandmother raised her with. This poor girl wants nothing more than to reset the famed Mayan clock, as is her destiny to do so, and to experience a happily ever after with Ren. Let’s not mention her visions, which have told her that maybe, just maybe, that isn’t the smartest idea.

So, we have a Dark-Hunter that predates Dark-Hunters, a woman with deities in her bloodline and it’s up to them to make sure that evil isn’t unleashed on the world. Can they do it? Sure they can. Can they be together at the end? Well, you’ll have to read to find out.

My problem with this book, and it may or may not be the same for you, is all the pantheon/shifter information. Who is a wolf, a coyote, a thunderbird? Does Ash need to build a zoo? Maybe he could rent some space from the Peltier’s and build a zoo large enough to encompass all of these creatures, plus the ones we have grown to know and love in the past books. There is almost an overabundance of new information. At times, it was too much. What makes a difference here is that Ren is the kind of character that melts your heart. I put his human life suffering and Dark-Hunter life dealings almost on the same scale as Ash. The desire to see him happy, with Kateri, is more important than the sheer magnitude of facts you’re supposed to get through in their pasts.

Case in point, this quote.

Pulling on his own clothes, Ren knew they should hurry, but he didn’t want this to end. He’d had so few perfect moments in his life. He could count them on one hand. And none of them came close to this.

Dark-Hunter fans, your loyalty will be paid off with this book. Go get it (and a box of tissues) and read. Oh, and a side note to Ms. Kenyon: You raised my interest in Sasha, so I respectfully ask/beg/plead for a book for Sasha and Savitar.

Great review. I haven’t read the last few books of this series, but you make me want to get back into it.

  2. Donna/BLHmistress says:

I agree I was a bit confused with that pantheon too. Yes we need Sasha and Savitar’s books asap. but guess we have to wait til after Styxx which I am so excited for.

I have stopped reading this series. I know I purchased the book before Time-Untime – can’t remember the title, but didn’t even finish the first chapter.
Her books are really good but I just lost interest.
    Great review!

I’m sorry that I didn’t see this before now, Janette, but honestly, I don’t have an answer to your question. I can do a little checking into it.

I didn’t like Time Untime. So boring and the Natice American pantheon is not interesting to me. We have enough going on in the series, we don’t need more.

I’m seeing that a lot and the pantheon information was problematic for me as well. A bit of overkill. The reason this book was so compelling, IMHO, is because of Ren and Kateri themselves. If the pantheon information is overlooked and all of the other distractions, then the love story between these two is awesome. And realistically, DH is PNR and the love story is what sells these books.

  6. Erica says:

SO disappointed in this!!!! The DH series is what made me fall in love with paranormal romance abd this just lacks SK’s spark the other novels have. Really hard to read and frankly quite boring.
    I couldn’t even finish it:(

  7. Kathy says:

I just finished Time Untime. I must say I was terribly dissapointed. I have read all the Dark Hunter novels and loved each one, espically Acheron. I would have returned it after the first few chapters, but I now own a Kendel and had to keep it. It seemed as though someone else wrote Time Untime, someone less experienced, and not familiar with the Dark Hunter. The way the charaters talked to each other was annoying. I’m sorry to write such negitive comments, but I really enjoy your books and hope this was a one time experience for me.

  8. Candace says:

Erica and Kathy, I understand what you are saying. But Acheron, the book, is an entity all to itself. I rank that book in my top twenty favorites of all time and have yet to see anything else on the PNR spectrum that comes close to the gut-wrenching emotion that Kenyon pulls out of her readers with this book. I don’t see another character in the DH-verse that is capable of pulling off a story like that. When reading, I was distracted by the overload of pantheon info but I looked at the basics, which is Ren and Kateri. Those two were great characters and their love was compelling. That is what my opinion was based on.

Maybe you guys can give Styxx a try when it comes out later this year.
