Beatrice has a very valuable gift. She can touch objects and read the emotions and memories of people associated with them. While this is helpful when working a case for the Otherworlder Enforcement Agency, it takes a heavy toll on Bea. She often relives people’s last moments of life and has to deal with the trauma associated with their deaths.

When Claude knocks on her door, she is on a mandatory leave of absence after a particularly gruesome case. Her ex might not have been whom she was hoping to see, but when he offers a chance to get out of the apartment and use her skills, she can’t refuse. Once she gets involved and realizes that this case is somehow related to her brother’s disappearance twenty years ago, she will do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of the mystery.

This is a short book, less than 150 pages. That just means that the author cuts the crap and gets straight to the goods. Vampire Games is a quick read that delivers a lot of action, a lot of romance, and a lot of twists. I have never read a book in this series or by this author, and was able to pick this one up without any confusion or that obligatory ‘catch up’ chapter. If this book is any indication of the other books in this series, I really need to check them out.

This work was not as dark as many other urban fiction detective pieces. The lightness of the romance and the lack of pages and pages of depressing back story helped to keep the book moving and focused. Oh, and Claude might have helped too.  There is nothing like a beautiful vampire whispering sweet nothings in the heroine’s ear to distract you from a ritualistic killing.

The author really managed to pack the book full of twists. I really wasn’t sure what to expect, but it definitely was not what happened in the last twenty pages. When you read a lot of books from the same genre, they get a little predictable. Not this book. Just when I thought I knew where the author was going with the story, she threw in another twist.

I really enjoyed Vampire Games. It was short, but the author made the most of every word. Twists, surprises, and romance left me wanting to buy the previous books in the series!

Sexual content: The sex-to-conversation ratio is higher than most. In other words, graphic sex. You get plenty of bang for buck in this book.
