Tiffany Allee Guest Post and Giveaway: The Reluctant Succubus

Succubus Lost by Tiffany AlleeI love the supernatural. And I’m not just talking about the television show with the two hot brothers (although, how can you not love Jensen Ackles?) called Supernatural. Paranormal creatures are fascinating to read and write about. Vampires, werewolves, witches—what’s not to love? Of all the magical beasties out there in book land, I find succubi and incubi among the most interesting paranormal creatures to read (and write) about.

Why?

They offer instant lust, which tends to come with instant trouble and conflict. The personalities of the characters behind the species vary widely. Some embrace their heritage wholeheartedly, while others tend to avoid it, or ignore it as much as they can. The “embrace-versus-resist” mentality many times stems from whether a character was born what they are, or made that way.

Marisol, the main character of my new book, Succubus Lost, is a succubus. She is also a detective in the Chicago Police Department’s paranormal unit, and the older sister of a rather traumatized young woman named Elaine. Born a succubus, Marisol is used to her lot in life. Men view her species in one of two ways: with obvious interest or barely-veiled suspicion.

Dealing with this reality her whole life has made Marisol a pretty tough cookie—an attribute she needs in order to deal with Costa.

Agent Valerio Costa from the OWEA (think FBI, but for paranormal cases) is working with Marisol to help her find her missing sister. His initial stance on succubi is quite clear, especially after Marisol uses her charm to get information from a potential witness. Marisol doesn’t shy away from a verbal match with Costa.

I gave the man a small wave as we exited the office and suppressed a smile as he stumbled over his words into the phone.

I put my blazer back on when the cool fall air surrounded me, and I walked in front of Costa to the sidewalk that led down into the library. As I approached the door, he grabbed my arm, just under my shoulder, and pulled me to a stop. His grip wasn’t rough, but it was firm.

“What?” I asked, angling my shoulder away from him so he’d release me.

He let go, and his arm grazed my breast as his hand fell away. I took in a quick breath and glared at him.

“What the hell was that?” His voice was cold, but not void of emotion.

“Excuse me?” My mouth dropped open and I snapped it shut, ignored the way my pulse skipped faster under his gaze.

“Do you really think flirting while on the job is appropriate?” Anger coated his tone, giving it a hard edge. “I’d think you could feed your desires on your own time.”

Heat flared in my chest and rushed up to my face. “What the hell are you talking about?”

“Come on, any idiot could tell that you were coming on to that little weasel.”

“An idiot might think that, yes,” I hissed. I spun around and marched through the library doors.

And while Marisol isn’t afraid to use her magnetism when questioning suspects and trying to solve cases, she also doesn’t see her “gift” as anything special. After all, it isn’t something she earned. It’s something she was simply lucky enough to be born with.

“You can still laugh, you know,” Costa said. “It’s not betraying her to not be in mourning every second of every day.” He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. “Besides, you’re beautiful when you laugh.” He cleared his throat. “Not that you’re not always—beautiful, I mean.”

“Yeah, well, that doesn’t exactly separate me from the crowd, now does it?” I said, suddenly more angry than happy about his compliment.

“Excuse me?”

“I’m a succubus,” I said, keeping my voice down to avoid bringing in the whole darn restaurant into our conversation. “Beauty is sort of a given. Allure, inspiring lust in the opposite sex. It all comes with the package.” I took a deep breath, trying to think through how to say what I meant. “I didn’t earn any of it. It’s just what I am.”

His cop face returned, expressionless and cold. “I suppose.”

Marisol may not feel her succubus powers make her special, but she does find them handy—and that was certainly fun to write about. I hope it’s just as fun to read.

If the author does it right I think I would enjoy most paranormal beasties, that said werewolves and other shifters are a definite favorite of mine 🙂

    • Annika says:

Also, how did I not know about this author and series? I prowl Amazon a LOT! Oh well, I’ll check out Banshee Charmer now for sure so thanks for the tip!

    • Hi Annika, I’m a big fan of shifters too! I recently turned in book three, and the hero is a lycan in that one. So much fun to write about!

      • Annika says:

        Hi Tiffany!
Yay! More werewolves! Looking forward to reading book three 🙂 Just bought Banshee Charmer and will start reading tonight (if my one year old lets me that is, he’s come down with a cold and is super fussy and not sleeping well)!

  2. Alison Robinson says:

Argh stupid work computers wont let me enter!

I like reading about all paranormal creatures although I’ve got to admit (whispers) I’d quite like a vampire who WASN’T nearly seven feet tall with rock hard abs and the same goes for all the other standard attributes of paranormal males.

    • Julie says:

I totally agree about the vamp thing Alison mentions. It’s always refreshing to see a vamp that isn’t cut from the same mold.

    • Wait…wait! I thought vamps were all born (or made) tall with rock-hard abs? I’m pretty sure that’s a prerequisite to become a vamp.

      *goes to double-check the application*

Haha. I totally agree that reading about different heroes is a lot of fun, and we don’t see enough of them. That’s part of why I made Costa a salamander…don’t see too many of those. Although I’ll admit his abs are *awesome*.

  3. Amanda J says:

I love any type of paranormal creature, always willing to read about something new!

  4. Thea Wilson says:

It’s got to be vampires all the way but every supernatural creature has it’s place in my book collection though!

    • Vampires are like classic cars, they never go out of style and are always fun. Okay, my Monday morning analogies aren’t the best, but I love a good vampire (also love a bad vampire, if you know what I mean). 😉

Vamps are present as side characters in all the books in this series, but I’m really excited for the fourth book, where my favorite vamp finally gets his day in the spotlight.

  5. Victoria Sloboda says:

I honestly like them all but recently have gotten into dragons.

  6. Zuzana says:

Actually, I love them all, but mainly demons and zombies.

    • I love demons too, and zombies are always fun. Diana Rowland, with her “My Life as a White Trash Zombie” book, has almost convinced me they can be sexy too. haha

  7. Kerry says:

I love shifters, vamps, etc – just about everything thats been written!!

  8. Julie says:

I do love a good vampire (like everyone else) but I really like it when I get something fresh. For example the world which Ilona Andrews created has vampires like nowhere else I’ve seen (although they are so not sexy).

    • Ilona Andrews has done an amazing job with the team’s fresh take on vamps. I think Curran singlehandedly makes up for the lack of sexy vamps in that world. 😀

  9. Kokolo says:

I love to read about werevolves and vampires, but I also like something new now and then. I’m really interested to see a succubus as a heroine.

    • Thanks, Kokolo! I’m all about the classics too, but I think Marisol’s a lot of fun. (Of course, I’m totally biased.) 😉

    • Keira says:

Richelle Mead’s Georgina Kincaid series also features a succubus as the heroine and is fantastic!

Can’t wait to check out this series, too!

  10. Sue says:

I would have to say shifters – although I found the iron druid series fantastic too. I have to look up this author – the amount I read I’m very surprised that I haven’t read her books (and this one sound interesting).

  11. Christina M says:

This sounds like a good series
to start reading. I wonder if the books will be interconnected or stand alones in the same world?

  12. Ilona says:

My preference is shifters or vampires but I’ll take demons too 😀 It will be interesting to read about a succubus so I’m adding this to my wishlist :d

  13. Tiffaney says:

I tend to like werewolves best, but I like just about any well written story, paranormal or otherwise (although I do like paranormal best 😀 )

  14. Jordan R says:

I love reading about were animals. But vampires done right will get me every time!

  15. trixie says:

love to read period. doesnt matter if it is romance, thriller, mystery, chick-lit, paranormal, urban fiction, erotica etc.. I read at least a book a day and I am always looking for a new author/new take to read. Will be adding Allee to my “list”… thanx

  16. Rebe says:

I definitely prefer shifters over vampires, but I’ve started to really enjoy reading books about Fae characters. Makes for a nice change of pace!

  17. Natasha says:

Vampires are my favorite. Thanks for the chance to win!!

  18. Victoria Zumbrum says:

I love vampires the most but I love reading about all different types of beasties.

  19. I’m a big fan of Otherworld books. The cover on this one makes me want to grab it and sit down to read. The idea of an agency overseeing the weres, and other supes adds a special cache to the story.

  20. wendy hoffman says:

I love all things paranormal! I haven’t read about a species that I didn’t like at all. Angels are my least favorite, but they are really growing on me. Thank you very much for the awesome giveaway!

  21. Shelley Bagby says:

I like shifters of all kinds. I’ve not read any books with a succubus
as a heroine, but would love to try it. Thanks!

  22. Karen says:

I enjoy reading about them all. If they are funny and they kick ass I usually like to read about them!

  23. Keira says:

Shifters/werewolves would have to be my favorite. I just love the primitive, wild side that the heroes have. And the passion. Where vamps are stereotypically portrayed as impassive and composed, shifters are always hot-tempered and aggressive. Personally, that’s just what I prefer in my paranormal men so new shifter books always excite me.

The fae are another favorite paranormal creature of mine. With the folklore that exists, I’ve found that authors are more likely to spin their own personal flare to the mythology of the creatures. I just like that there’s not really anything set about the fae and that when reading about them it’s almost always something fresh.

For their originality, humor, romance, and awesome action scenes, Ilona Andrews’s Kate Daniels series and the Edge are by far two of my top favorite series. Their worldbuilding is some of the best I’ve ever read. Similarly, Karen Marie Moning’s the Fever series and Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments are also among my top favorites. When paired with amazing writing talent, originality just stays with you for so much longer and keeps the series from blurring into the mesh of all the other supernatural books you read. In my mind, that factor always ends up making a big impact.

Shall check this series out! Good guest post!

    • Totally with you on Ilona Andrews and Karen Marie Monings books. I actually have the first Mortal Instruments book in my pile to read. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

      • Keira says:

Yeah, they’re really good! If you like the first, certainly read the second and third, but I’d suggest being wary with the fourth and fifth books. In an opinion shared among several others I know, Cassandra Clare extending her series past the original intended trilogy was a mistake. But you should definitely try to read the first three books! They’re hilarious! By far, some of the best YA material out there!

  24. DANIELA says:

    Hi
I have to say that my favorite are vamps, tall, strong, gorgeous vamps, hehe… I also like shifters and demons.
I’d like to add that I really liked Banshee Charmer 🙂

  25. Mel Thomas says:

I’ll read anything paranormal but feel there aren’t enough books about succubi, incubi and berserkers. The Reluctant Succubus sounds really good. Thanks for the opportunity!

  28. Patti says:

I enjoy most paranormal beasties. I have loved the succubi books I have read so far and would love to read this one as well. I must admit most of the paranormal series I have read lately are vampires or shifters or both. I really have enjoyed the books I have read on the Fae as well. I love a good paranormal romance.

  29. Joani s says:

I don’t know if I have a “favorite”, but I love me some vamps and weres. Of course, most para books have those in abundance, but I do enjoy reading about all of them!!

  30. erinf1 says:

Thanks for a great post and giveaway! Congrats on the new release 🙂

I don’t really have a favorite. Vampires, Shifters, Dragons… whatever is well written and can suck me right into that world!

  31. Liz Semkiu says:

I enjoyed your excerpts. I’ll read about any paranormal creature, but I have a special love for dragons. Thanks for the contest!

  32. FionaL says:

I have only read a few books with supernatural beings other than Vampires and Succubus. But I think I like reading about witches/wizards and faeries the most.

  33. Robin D says:

I like shapeshifters, especially feline, as well as dragons and Faeries.

  35. Book Huntress says:

Great post – very interested to start this series…

  36. Book Huntress says:

Hmmmm… I like them all as each has it’s own pros/cons – plus depends on the writers world

  37. Na S. says:

Vampires and now I’m really enjoying meeting shifters (all kinds).

  38. Teawench says:

I’m a huge fan of vamps but not the pretty ones. I’m always willing to expand my horizons, though, and this definitely sounds new & exciting.

  39. Lindsey says:

Hm…? Tough one. I like most any paranormal beasties. I’m an avid vampire fan, but I also read witches, fae, shifters, nephilium, and angels. I honestly have not read too many books with succubi, if any at all. I have a few on my to read list… one series by Courtney Cole I believe and the excerpts above have made me interested in reading ‘Succubis Lost’. My interest has also come from watching the series ‘Lost Girl’. I will have to say my favorite paranormal beasties are vampires.

  40. Maya says:

I will definitely read it. It sounds like a really good book.
I just finished reading succubus diaries and want to read more succubus 🙂

  41. Sandy Lion says:

I am partial to vampires and feline shapeshifters, but demons are not so bad either. Most of the time I am pretty equal opportunity when it comes to the paranormal world though because it all has treated me very well so far literally. sdylion(at)gmai(dot)com

  42. cindy vinzant says:

I will definitely read it It sounds really good I love to read

  43. Rachel at theJeepDiva says:

I like all kinds especially something new. Vampires are my favorite but I am liking mermaids right now also.

  44. Erin Theiss says:

I seem to be partial to vampires and werewolves, but I read just about anything in the genre 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!

  45. Tracey D says:

I like bird shifters; they are great!

  46. Karen Arrowood says:

I haven’t come across any that I don’t like yet, but I seem to read vampires and werecreatures the most.

  47. June M. says:

I have to say that I have never found a paranormal creature that I did not like. I love vampires, shifters, all sorts of demons, witches, etc. I have not read any books where the love interest was a zombie, I am not too sure the would be something I would really get into.

    • June, if I may, I’d recommend “My Life as a White Trash Zombie” by Diana Rowland. The take on zombies in that book is very unique, and it changed my perspective on zombies a bit. Fun book, too!

  48. And thank you again, everyone! Such a warm welcome, and I really appreciate it. 🙂 Best of luck to you all with the contest!

  49. Melissa says:

Like most people have said, I like most anything! Werecreatures are definitely my favorite, though.

  50. Pardeep says:

    Vampires and shifters!
