VBC’s Essential Vampire Book Reading List

logo

Vampire Book ClubThe Vampire Book Club team love giving recommendations. Usually, we ask a few questions (favorite authors, any genres you hate, etc.) to help find just the right book for you. However, we also get asked what are the best vampire books. Kind of goes with the VBC territory, right?

Best vampire series? We’ll usually call out J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood (get Dark Lover), Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress (get Halfway to the Grave) and Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy (get Vampire Academy) as defaults. A great place to start for recommendations is pretty much anything on this site, but also our recommendations section.

This post, though? This is a quiz-style list that will let you see how deep into the vampire book world you’ve waded. Our list is skewed toward paranormal romance because duh, but we’ve also included urban fantasy greats, classics (Dracula, anyone) and a couple titles that touch on horror (like Poppy Z. Brite). If you’ve read all these titles, you probably should email Chelsea about working for VBC.

Caveat: This list isn’t meant to be exhaustive. You’re totally going to think “why didn’t they include XYZ?” There could be lots of reasons. One, we went for books with vampires at the forefront (must be a key character and not just some one the hero battles). Two, there are lots of books. If we missed your favorite, add it to the comments here, and help others find more great vampire books.

37 out of 86. I sort of cheated insofar as if I tried to read a book and didn’t like it/didn’t finish it I counted it towards the total

  2. Alison R says:

I don’t recall seeing any Anne Rice books?

  3. I only got 29…. Do I have to hand in my VBC card Chels?! :/

This was a lot of fun. 56/86 and a couple on my TBR pile that I haven’t gotten to yet.

  6. 24 of 86. I would’ve thought I would’ve been higher. I guess I need to read more. I didn’t see Pamela Palmer’s series on there. Did I miss it?

  7. Angie says:

32/86 but with some I wasn’t sure if I have read them or not. Will need to check some I did not know out. Were the Chicagoland Vampires on the list?

  8. Susan H. says:

19 out of 36- and thanks so much for giving me MORE books for my already overloaded TBR list! LOL

33 – And I found a few more to check out.

I’m surprised you did not have the classic E.E. Knight series The Vampire Earth starting with Way of the Wolf.

    29. I, too, thought my number would be higher. Fun to check out! Thanks!
