Veronica Wolff Guest Post: Checklist for fighting with vampires (& Giveaway!)

Fall into (Urban) Fantasy with VBC and MBWVeronica Wolff’s Isle of Night is the first in a new series merging the young adult dystopian and vampire genres. In the book, which releases Sept. 6, girls are pitted against each other at a school in Scotland training to become Watchers — those who partner with the vampires to aid in policing the paranormal. Fighting, hot boys, vampires… well, you can see why I’d be intrigued.

In the event you were planning on fighting with or against the vampires, she’s assembled 12 important things you’ll need. Also, we’ll be giving away a copy of Isle of Night at the end of the post.

12 THINGS YOU’LL NEED TO FIGHT WITH (OR AGAINST) VAMPIRES
by Veronica Wolff

Isle of Night by Veronica Wolff1. A good weapon.
Like every other girl on the Isle of Night, you’ll get to select your weapon of choice. It can be as elegant as a throwing star, as clichéd as a switchblade, or as crude as a whip.

2. The ability to think fast.
Because your opponent’s weapon of choice might just be some lighter fluid and a Zippo.

3. Willpower.
Because the most dangerous weapon is seduction. And vampires have had hundreds of years in which to practice their skills.

4. A killer instinct.
Because your opponent has one, and in competition, it’s kill or be killed.

5. A decent pair of shoes.
Bad things are out there, and the time will come when you need to run. Sneakers are great. A solid pair of boots are even better, and well suited to kicking some ass. Just be sure to mind the older girls—they’d love to see you run. In the snow. Barefoot.

6. A past.
When fighting for or against vampires, it always helps to be a little angry. Maybe you have some experience taking a hit, or giving one. Either way, if you find yourself on the Isle of Night, it means you’ve hit the end of the line.

7. A sense of humor.
A past might be good, but only a sense of humor will get you a future. You can catch a vampire’s attention, but it takes a sharp mind to keep it.

8. Blinders.
Because your teacher is hot. But he’s your teacher.

9. The ability to learn quickly.
At any moment, you might need to dive in black water, pick a lock, or eavesdrop in German.

10. Friends.
Because someone needs to have your front while you’re getting stabbed in the back.

11. Eyes on the back of your head.
Because vampires? They’ll turn on you.

12. An ability to fit in.
Because if you don’t, you’ll die.
