Alpha Showdown 2018 Round 12: Charles Cornick vs. Adam Hauptman

VBC: Home of Alpha ShowdownUpdate: This round is now closed. Adam Hauptman fought hard and won with 56% of the vote. He will advance in the 2018 Alpha Showdown.

We’re now in the quarter final rounds in our quest to crown the year’s Biggest Book Badass in the paranormal world. (Check out the bracket here.)

The remaining Alphas have been all battle tested and come out victorious. Today’s competitors both faced some tough competition from Karen Marie Moning’s heroes in their previous round. Charles Cornick from the Alpha and Omega series edged out Barrons with 54% of the vote. Adam Hauptman from the Mercy Thompson series defeated Ryodan with an impressive 74%.

Patricia Briggs fans are either going to love this match up or hate it. To those in the latter category, I can only say at least it’s not Adam and Mercy. (Though at this point there’s still a chance that could happen in the finals.)

Just like in the previous rounds, the polls will be open for 48 hours.  Vote using the Rafflecopter form at the bottom of the post. You’ll also be entered to win this round’s giveaway.

Charles was first introduced to us as the Marrok’s assassin in Moon Called. (For those not familiar with the series, the Marrok is the leader of all werewolves in North America. He is also the oldest known werewolf and Charles’ father). It isn’t until he gets his own story in the novella Alpha and Omega that we really get to see another side to Charles, besides the assassin that he shows the world.

Charles is quite the badass. He is the one who is sent out kill misbehaving and rogue werewolves. He is one of the most powerful werewolves in the world, with only his father and maybe his half-brother Samuel that could match him. He can even dominate over another alpha, and Charles doesn’t even need a pack to draw on. He can also shift from human to wolf and vice versa faster than anyone else, including the Marrok. He also has the ability to shift back into human with his clothes, which is a nice trick.

With Anna, Charles’ mate and omega werewolf, at his side, Charles becomes even more than just the pack assassin. She brings out the softer side of him. We see that he is more than just a killer, something that she has to remind him all the time.

Brother Wolf is Charles’ other half. Unlike most werewolves, his wolf is almost like another personality. Anna is able to tell which one is more in charge, no matter the physical shape, based on the behavior. Brother Wolf helps protect Charles from his darker self.

As we all know, not all werewolf Alphas are created equal and Adam Hauptman is way above the others. So, what makes Adam so different?

No one can deny that as an Alpha werewolf, Adam is as strong as they get. He is one of the most powerful Alphas in the world, second only to the Marrok and his sons. He’s fought off vampires, fae, demons, and even gods. He doesn’t shy away from a fight no matter how bad the odds are. And not only will he wipe the floor with you, he will be one step ahead of you the whole time he’s beating you into the mats in the most efficient way possible.

“Adam understood the end game all right, but to him, the people mattered more than the game.”

He controls a large pack of half-tamed, dangerous werewolves and helps guard the Tri-Cities with the sheer power of his will alone. The man is not only intelligent and strong; he’s extremely loyal, and aggressively protective when it comes to his own. He’s the kind of Alpha that takes care of everyone in his charge, plus those he hasn’t even sworn to protect. Plus, the man can rock a suit!

While Adam is fiercely protective of his mate, he also knows who she is and what she’s capable of. He loves Mercy just the way she is.

“I like her just the way she is, Bran.” And he meant it, greasy overalls, broken fingernails, and all.”

He is supportive and lets her fight her own fights and I can’t think of anything that is sexier than that. But the moment Mercy needs help, he’s right there to rescue her or defend her.

“Mercy is a tough, smart woman. She can defend herself— I do not have to protect her. She is not weak or dependent or needy. She doesn’t need the pack. She doesn’t need me.”

I shot to my feet. “That’s not true,” I said hotly.

He tilted his head a little, his eyes meeting mine. His eyes softened. “I misspoke,” he said in a steady voice. “She doesn’t need me to make sure she has enough food or a place to live— that is my privilege, but she doesn’t need me to do that. She doesn’t need me to keep her safe or to make her a whole person. She doesn’t need me to do anything except love her. Which I do.”

Powerful. Intelligent. Dominant. Respectful. Gorgeous. Adam is the whole package. When he talks, everyone else shuts up and listens. Ladies and gentleman, we clearly have a winner and his name is Adam Hauptman.

How can you do this to me!?!? ….. I’ll choose quick, like taking off a bandaid…. ADAM!

  4. Darchelle says:

I’m sure authors love their “children” being pitted against each other …. NOT! As much as I hate this, Adam is an Alpha to a pack full-time so he has my vote.

  5. Liz S says:

Tough choice but my vote goes to Charles.

  6. Faith says:

In a straight up challenge Charles would win. Adam is an experienced alpha though, so this is a tough choice.

  7. Marty says:

Tough one, but Charles, after all he is the enforcer.

  8. JenM says:

I love both of these guys and both of these series, but this time, my vote is going to Adam because of the way he loves Mercy.

  9. Kimberly C says:

Love both, but down to the wire? Adam!

  10. Dawn Roberto says:

Dang it I love both characters but I think Adam edges out Charles by a hair for me 🙂

  11. Sheri says:

This is a tough choice for me because I like them both…..My vote goes to…… Charles!!

  16. Tiffany Williams says:

I have to vote for Adam Hauptman.

  17. Elizabeth G says:

I’ll have to go with charles, as he can be an alpha badass without being an alpha. I think adam even commented about calling charles scarey 🙂

  18. Janie McGaugh says:

This is a really tough choice. I seem to remember Mercy talking about this in one of the books. I’m pretty sure that she said Adam would win, so I’ll go with him.

  19. Sarah says:

A really tough choice. I’m going with Charles for this one, but I’m not really convinced either way.

  20. Sandy says:

Charles because I don’t want to see Adam go up against Mercy in the next round, that would be wrong on so many levels.

  21. Barb says:

  22. Preethi says:

Rogan, of course! Mercy and crew are no comparison to Connor Rogan (especially with Nevada and family with him too). Rogan will easily win Mercy, when it comes to a fight between them.
