Alpha Showdown 2018 Round 2: Kate Daniels vs. Ethan Sullivan

Welcome to the 2018 Alpha Showdown at Vampire Book Club where each year we crown the Biggest Book Badass in the paranormal world based on your votes. This is our eighth Showdown, but the competition is just as fierce as ever. Check out the bracket here.

Round 2 features a pair of Alpha Showdown veterans, each making their seventh appearance.

Ilona Andrews’s Kate Daniels was the first female Showdown winner in 2017. She’s taking on Master Vampire Ethan Sullivan from Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampires series who’s still looking for his first title.

We love both of these characters, and we know our readers do too. But only one of them will advance in the competition. Each round of voting is open for 48 hours. And if you haven’t already voted in Round 1, the polls are still open until midnight Wednesday. All Hail the returning Champion!!

That’s right folks, last year’s winner is back to defend her title!

So why vote for Kate again this year?

As if I even need to answer that question, but here we go:

It’s because everyone knows Kate is the only Alpha on this list who could easily best any of the other contenders. Vampire? Staked it. Shifter? Beat it. Mage? Ensorcelled it. God? Banished it. Etc., etc.

And as of this year we can add badass mother to this list! Nothing is fiercer than a mother and I think this new addition only adds another advantage for Kate. When the stakes are higher she’ll fight harder.

There is nothing that Kate has faced that she’s backed away from, no fight that she didn’t triumph. Even putting herself in the line of fire to protect the innocent and those she loves, and she’s got an equal number of people who support and love her right back.

We’ve seen her push back against her megalomaniac father and come out on top time and time again, and each time she gets stronger. But unlike her equally powerful father, Kate doesn’t let her power go to her head. She could probably build towers and be the precursor to the rise and fall of civilizations, but she doesn’t take that path. She remains humble and modest preferring to do what is right and just.

You obviously know Kate is worthy of the Alpha Champion title since last year she was the first female winner. Let’s give her another first and make her the Two Time Consecutive Alpha Showdown Champion! Has a nice ring to it huh? 😉

Sharp suit, sharp sword, sharp fangs, sharp-tongued Sentinel by his side. You won’t find a more iconic Alpha than the Master of Cadogan House. That’s why Ethan Sullivan is appearing in his seventh consecutive Showdown. Can you believe he’s never won the title?

But even death couldn’t keep him down for long. Ethan’s battled vampires, sorcerers, demons and mercenaries. When we saw him last, he was about to take on the world’s first baby vampire. Taking the Alpha Showdown crown should be a piece of cake after that!

Ethan’s not the kind of Alpha who takes on an enemy single-handedly. He commands an army. And it usually includes shifters and sorcerers and others who choose to fight by his side because they believe in him. He’s Chicagoland’s champion, not just vampires’. That’s why his swooning fans can buy a t-shirt, and even underwear, with his name on it, much to Merit’s chagrin. Do any of these other Alphas have that claim to fame?

It isn’t just his fighting skills that epitomize the word Alpha, it’s also his skills as a political and diplomatic mastermind. Over the course of the series, we saw Ethan grow into that leadership role. And by fighting for the entire supernatural community, he earned the right to represent them. He holds his own with supernatural and government leaders, proving Alphas can have brains as well as brawn.

Ethan Sullivan is an Urban Fantasy icon who deserves to add an Alpha Showdown title to his resume. I mean, he’s already got his own emoji.
