ROUND 3: ANITA BLAKE vs. EUGENIE MARKHAM

Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. HamiltonAnita Blake

First appeared in: Guilty Pleasures (get a copy)
Supernatural status: Necromancer with lots of magical ties to the supernatural community

Championing for Anita: @JillyJameson

This is a woman who can handle any problem thrown at her. Multiple strands of shapeshifting DNA? No problem. Freaky vampire-lust-like powers? Handled. This woman has managed a bond not only with the calculating Master of the City, Jean-Claude, but also the broody lycanthrope, Richard, who leads the wolves. And all of that is only ONE of her triumvirate. Capably handling more than six men with their plethora of emotional issues? Point me to another woman who can do that and not lose her mind.

She has been shot, stabbed, bitten, burned, hunted, mentally manipulated, and still she pops up to fight another day. She hunts and executes rogue vampires while sometimes simultaneously managing her job of raising the dead.

Storm Born by Richelle MeadEugenie Markham

You know her from: Dark Swan series by Richelle Mead
First appeared in: Storm Born (review | get a copy)
Supernatural status: Shaman and half-faerie

Championing for Eugenie: Chelsea from Vampire Book Club

You just shouldn’t mess with Eugenie Markham. Come into the mortal realm and she’ll send your supernatural ass packing to another dimension. In the mortal realm she’s a powerful shaman, able to exorcise demons, faeries and even elemental spirits. But, oh, try and start something in the Faerie Realm with her and she won’t just kill you. No, Eugenie will take your land, your realm and suck away your connection to this world.

Eugenie can be damn scary. But being a leader, an alpha, isn’t about just striking fear. She cares about her people and she’ll use her magical muscle — both fae and shamanic — to keep her family and the people of the Thorn land safe. It may have taken her time, but Eugenie has come into her own as a formidable queen who won’t let her armies fight battles alone.

Sure, Anita can work her magic, too, but Eugenie can call in a hurricane and brandish a sword with the best of them.

Come back tomorrow to place your votes in the battle between swoon-worthy YA heroes Dimitri Belikov from Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series and Jace Wayland from Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series. You can see the full bracket, and keep updated on which polls are open by visiting the Alpha Showdown page.

I’ve voted on your other alpha showdown rounds, but I have to say this was a tough one. I love anita blake I have read the entire series again and again. However eugenie markham is great – I didn’t think iron crowned was as good as the first two books is the series though. I am really looking forward to shadow heir and hit list. 🙂

  2. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm – Love both series – but I have to go with Anita on this one. I think if it were a real match Anita would mop the floor with Eugenie AS LONG as Eugenie didn’t have help from Dorian 😛

  3. Mandy says:

Sorry, I know people love Eugenie – and I do like her. But Anita is seriously one BA chick! She could probably wipe out half the men in this showdown and hold her own with the rest… I mean, when she gets her blank, “I’m going to kill you and feel no remorse” face on, scary! A lot of these alphas fight because their lives depend on it. But remember, Anita started as a hired executioner… I think that gives her a little leg up. she’s also a survivor and has no problem doing what is necessary.

  4. Smash Attack says:

I haven’t read the Dark Swan series, but Mead rocks, so I assume Eugenie does, as well. I’m voting for her. I detest Anita. If she could f*ck her way out of it, she might win…
(Ok, I dislike the AB series because it started strong and lost me when AB became a nympho and the plot was lost on me. I love smex but I need plot too. Just my opinion!)

I know that the later books have a lot of the sex in it, and while it is entertaining when used sparingly it can be a bit much for most people. But if you look at it from the early books point of view she is pretty scrappy and has faced many different types of supernatural creatures though.

  5. Joani S says:

This is a tuff one. I have read both these series, and like both characters, I liked AB more before all the sex, but she’s still a KA chick!! Eugenie is great and tuff too, but I think in the mortal realm AB will kick her butt!

  6. As tough decisions go this one is a biggie but I am still to this day a die hard Anita Blake fan and I have to champion her as someone who can kill without guilt, without remorse and without flinching… I do not think that Eugenie has that down just yet so when push comes to shove experience in dealing death without hesitation gives Anita the edge to come out the winner…

    {I see a bit of the old Anita peeking through in the last few books, maybe that trend might take hold and bring back fans of the series if they are willing to wait and try again!}

You can criticize a lot of Anita Blake’s decisions when it comes to her social life but if there is killing to be done or innocents to be protected, I will take her over almost anyone. Eugenie is good but if we want her to live and fight another day do not put her in the ring against Anita.
